  • Sand Flag mount on roof rack

I am fitting a sand flag on the weekend to get ready for a trip in a couple of weeks. I was going to mount it on the bulbar but my wife commended that it will directly in her line of sight. I have seen a couple of photographs of vehicles with the sand flag mounted on the end of the roof rack (I suspect mounted on the antenna mounting point). Although the mount on the roof rack (I have a Powerful4x4 full length steal rack) looks quite strong, I am concerned that the flag pole may cause stress on the welds over time.

I was wondering if anyone has mounted a sand flag to their roof rack and if they have had any problems. Any positive or negative feedback on the subject would be good.

Is that what you say to your mrs Samo? Funny statement thou. I would have said "what is she doing in the car" or "Why is she in the front seat".

when you look at the big picture your not gunna mount it in front of the driver (lol), makes sense to mount it there as there is already a mount on most bullbars if you dont have an antenna or if there is its only a matter of drilling a hole through the bullbar or buying a bracket to mount it to, i just look for the easiest and strongest approach, no use making things complicated if you dont have 2. cheers samo

          Smakb,

Can I suggest the flag has a bit of flex hen mounted on the bar. I don't expect it will effect the welds but wifey should be told it will and to drink a glass of tuffen the f&^k up. If you look at my build there is an easy way to pin it back while traveling and even doing this does no interfere with view. Fact is we all become immune to aerials etc in line of sight after a short while.

Have to agree with you there. although I only attach my sand flag when I actually need it and keep it inside the car when not in use.
It may annoy you for the first 30 minutes, then you or more importantly she wont even know its there.

Have a look at post #132 in my rig build here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...camper-trailer I have mounted my sand flag to the roof rack, strong as, in fact I managed to break my sand flag under a low lying tree but the mount is still perfect and I have a fairly hefty sand flag.

              Cheers Andrew

Thanks for the information. Still thinking about my options (for the sand flag - not my wife).

I mounted a quick release 2m mine safety whip flag (ARB) on an aerial bracket attached to my Tracklander roof rack (Jarram). The flag was stowed in the rack and fitted as needed. Like AJ120, I broke the fibreglass flag just above the release mechanism whilst driving through trees. Fortunately I was able to reseat the whip into the bracket that had stayed in place. The quick release mechanism worked a treat until the ball bearings seized in the Pilbara. I could only remove the flag by unbolting the stud from the bracket. Cleaning and greasing the ball bearings fixed the problem. Out of sight, out of mind!
