  • Accidents do happen....

Came across the Fowles Auto Auction website the other day and thought it was quite interesting viewing all the salvage vehicles they have.

Just out of interest I did a search on Prados and funnily enough, back came about 10 or so pictures of badly damaged vehicles. A few days later and another set of new Prados all with similar damage.

What I can't understand is most of them appear to be rollovers like this one...

... Most of the time as well the whole roof is crushed to a point where the driver or passenger would be seriously injured or even killed.

What I really would like to know is, are these accidents caused on the road so to speak or in offroad country where for example someones just been unlucky and flipped their Prado going up or down a hill??

I understand 4wd's have a high cetnre of gravity and a more prone to rollover, is the Prado more at risk of roof crush due to the body on chassis approach? With all that light truck construction underneath, are we more susceptible than a monocoque chassis?

Frightening pics, They don't appear to be 'traffic accidents', thats for sure..........my immediate thoughts were.......why no airbag deployment?

Airbags will only kick in with a significant hit to the front or side if you have side bags. The body looked pretty good to me if it had rolled over.

Yes this must have been a tame week. A few weeks ago they had photos that were much worse, with the roof totally crushed to the headrests on nearly all of them.

They would make great spare parts, that hard wheel cover looks quite good, pity about the bar.

GXL = no side airbags (curtain). Front will not deploy in this form of accident..

I reckon it will polish out ok anyway, have done worse to the Rally car and still seen it driven thru more stages of the race

I have seen Pajeros with more damage from light rollovers, so I dont think the Monocoque chassis is any better.

              Jepers.
Who is that and how did it happen?????
Was it fast? or hit embankment and topple over.

If its the latter I have done that in a mini, so not related to top heavy dynamics...
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Look at all the greenery stuffed in the front bumper, methinks it kissed the embankment before lying down.

Not a good look, must have wrecked their day. But, being Toyota tough, I reckon you could drag it back onto it's wheels and drive away. (Maybe not!)

Not one of the best days of my life.

I grew up pretty fast after that accident. Realised I wasn't invincible and that 4WDs dont handle the same as a little mitsubishi lancer.
Worse was that i could have killed my best mates.

Occurred in the Watagans back in 2005. Kinda a long story but it involved speed, rain, gravel and the car getting sideways and me trying to do the best rally driving i could to keep it from going off the edge of the mountain.

My insurance company doesn't like me much. I'm the reason why the premiums are higher for male drivers under 25

                        cheers

we've all been there! well i have anyway! i think i managed to make money out of my first insurer... i think my payout rate was 1:1.7 (for every dollar i gave them they had to pay out 1.70 (and i had some pretty high premiums!))

but we learn and move on!

I've rolled while 4wd'ing once before (not in the prado), but it didn't involve speed, rain, gravel... or insurance. I just wasn't paying enough attention on an easy section... ops:

Have a look at the latest ones....

These auction guys go through a huge number of these every week, I am just shocked at the amount. I suppose as being one of the most popular 4wd's there are always bound to be a large proportion of accidents in relation to the number sold.

These appear to be very serious, too serious for someone to have made a mistake.

Hope the people in this one are ok.

Again always appears to be rollovers...

                              Bush accident or road?

If it was offroad, it sure must have been a fall from somewhere?

It certainly makes me want to look at some sort of 4wd training. I honestly don't know how the Prado would react, especially in emergency situations on a highway. Also how would these handle if they were raised by 40-50mm. Would they be more at risk of rollover?

On gravel it appears to be quite sure footed and I have had that threshold feeling in my gut saying I should back off way before the Prado even showed signs of losing control.

On a lighter note, have a look at the last photo, the side angle of it makes it look like a ute, quite a nice one too!
