1CB and myself are looking at these (although he doesn't actually have a winch yet ). The thimble is $52.95 and the saver to go with it is $8.42 plus $41.00 postage (all USD). Makes $102.37US so about $106.10 AUS at the moment. Buying two it's still $41 postage though.

Replaces the hook on your winch - see here:

I have their Tube Thimble and thinking about getting the Safety Thimble. You need to keep a shackle with your tree trunk protector. My 4T shackles won't fit so I have to use 3T. Personally I would go back to a hook soft/eye setup if I could work out a good way of securing the hook.

I have a hawse so can't wind the hook into the fairlead as it will damage it. Therefore I need an eyebolt somewhere on the bar to secure the hook to. I'm not keen on that as I don't know what Mr Insurance man would say if I had an accident. I say this because when I asked to get some antenna tabs welded the comment was 'it will remove airbag compliance of the bar'. The other thing to consider is it sticks out like dogs balls and Mr Plod may not like it if he is being picky.

I've been looking at the Winch Savers but a minor 'issue' I have with my winch is that to be able to fit the hook on the rope I had to squash the end of the thimble as the opening in the hook was too small to fit on the end. The problem with squashing the end was that it caused the thimble to open in the other direction (if that makes sense). I feel it may put some strain on the end of the rope. I looked at getting a new hook but that's going to cost another $40 or so, plus the cost of a winch saver. I like the look of the Viking thimble - nice and neat.

Can you not just get a Winch Saver or a Kong dog toy so that you can pull it against the Hawse?

I have seen this before also. The Viking guys do the rope too. Trekky, are you looking at the rope, if so what size.

I have a Warn 9k and was considering a black anodised thimble, rope and hawse for my Warn9k/ARB deluxe bar. Only reason I haven't made a move to buy is because I don't know what size rope and what length I need and which hause fits best.

No mate, I was going to use the existing Dyneema 10 mm rope that came with the winch - after all, as 1CB would point out, it hasn't been used My rope is 26 metres long. I fitted a TigerzII offset hawse on mine.

The comment on shackles got me thinking. I have a 13,000lb winch which is roughly 5.9 T. My shackles are 3.2 T and 4.7 T so I guess they are under-rated compared to the winch. If I fit one of the Viking thimbles am I creating a new weak point if it can only take a 3 or 4 T shackle? Having said that, I don't believe that the hook on my winch is as strong as the shackles anyway. Or am I just getting carried away with numbers as it's unlikely I could get 5.9 T with the Prado?
