  • Windows 7 ARRGGHH!!!!!! #$%^&*(^$!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I am off to the diesel injection place this morning to fit my Chip it to the Prado. Last night I fired up my laptop (approx 2 years old) after not having used it for a few months and the problems start.......... It has windows 7 installed, (from the factory) and the last time I used it, if I remember correctly it updated to Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Now I have no wireless internet access either via my home wireless router or, via my usb/flash drive 3G roaming wireless internet. To say this is frustrating is a massive *&^$!!! understatement.

I have tried a system restore but it wont go back far enough, I have also googled other ways to remove it, but for some reason it wont even show itself in add remove programs. (yes I have clicked on the show updates).

I would rather not, but at the moment I am seriously considering buying windows XP and loading that, as I have never been impressed with windows 7.

If there are any computer wizz's out there that can help it would be greatly appreciated....................

P.S. At this point of time I would like to stab Bill Gates in the eye with a section of his severed bowel............

Check if the firewall has activated after sp1, this could cause access problems. Also are you getting an ip address on your laptop when your trying to access the net?

Do you have internet access with a network cable plugged in?

To check if you have a valid IP address navigate through the following: Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Centre -> Change adapter settings -> [right click] Wireless Network Connection -> Status

A window will open that shows the connectivity of IPv4 and IPv6. They will normally say either Internet or No Network Access

It's possible that your wireless adaptor has failed. Windows 7 updates should not make you lose network connection.

Some laptops have a switch on the case for turning wireless on/off.

That would be my guess too...
Next to the Clock in the task bar should be a network/wireless icon move your mouse pointer over that icon and see what's the tip you are getting.... (Disconnected/Limited Access/Internet Access)

It's not likely that Wifi card being faulty or switched off is the cause if a USB 3G modem doesn't allow internet access either.

              1. When you say "no wireless internet access" do you mean Internet Explorer isn't loading pages?
              If so...
              2. Are you able to even connect to your Wifi network?
              3. Does the 3G broaband client establish a connection?
              4. Are you able to access the Internet with a cable?

              Re: Installing XP
Don't do it. I don't think you can even buy XP any more. Even if you could, there may be no driver support for XP from the Laptop manufacturer. A lot of manufacturers these days use SATA controllers, designed for Windows Vista and 7, that can not run in IDE or compatibility mode. If you try to boot the XP disc all you will get is a Blue Screen of Death unless you create a custom XP disc with the SATA/RAID drivers slip streamed into the image. As I said before, the required drivers may not even exist.

You are much better off to reinstall Windows 7 if you need to reinstall the OS. You should either have a Windows 7 recovery disc or partition on the Hard drive that you can use to reinstall the OS.

Gotta agree with this. For the average home user apple are unbelievable. We had windows based machines for years and were forever reloading, rebooting, crashed hard drives etc etc.

In 2009 we bought an IMac and have never looked back. Has not had a single thing done to it. Never had a virus affect it. Unless you are an online gamer or a tech geek, and are happy to go along with some of Apples copyright stuff (itunes) they are a revelation.

Best of luck with your probs.

I think a fresh reload of windows 7 is going to be the best option, I could stuff around for days trying to find out what is going on. I did a quick google and it appears there is a substantial amount of issues with Windows 7 SP 1 in relation to internet access both ADSL and wireless.

Might ring my ISP (westnet) and see if they can help, they have been very good in the past..........

Your ISP won't be able to (or shouldn't be asked to) help if the issue is with Windows 7, which we are yet to verify but the thread title suggests you are adamant that this is the case.

Well after a few hours with the aircon going and having de-stressed first I eventually got the wireless internet going again. I have no idea what actually happened, but I ended up deleting the wifi connection and setting it up again, and all is now working. BUT..... it still wont recognized the USB/COM port adaptor for my chip it........ It wont load the drivers manually, or automatically.............

Chipit advises that they do not support Windows 7.....its in the fine print, and what they tell you when you phone.
The USB serial adaptor supplied with the chipit doesnt work with windows 7. I had the same problems with the supplied adaptor, so on Chipit's advice bought another USB serial adaptor (different driver/s) from Jaycar $29.95 which works with Windows 7, and allows you to change between the chipit tunes.
A little strange that we have to resort to old technology (ie serial port) to plug in to their chip, but that's the way they do it .....

I actually got some more time this morning before going to work to play around with the laptop. I used davros's advise and ended up with Windows suggesting another driver which had to be loaded twice and then recognized the USB to serial Port adaptor. Will have a play tomorrow and see if it recognizes the Chip it, but appears it should all be good at this stage............
