Window tinting

Well I tried to do my own tinting on the Prado.This is one job that requires a lot of practice and someone who can give you hands on advice whilst you are doing it.I first started with the rear quarter windows being that they are the easiest to play with.The first try I didn't pre shrink the film and it just creased and looked crap.So I went and purchased a heat jun and pre fitted the film to the outer window heat shrunk it.The film stiffened and was a lot easier to handle.Put it on and it looked good initaially,After a couple of hours bubbles appeared and now it looks as bad as the first one.So now I have sent away for a better squeegee and will try again.I will spend up to a couple of hundred as I like to try and do it my self but this one looks like

Spend up to a couple of hundred......, thats all it costs to get it done professionally. But good on ya for trying.

Trick with the main doors is to remove the inner door trim to get tint low down on the glass.

I usually use a guy I know at Sungard Marion (Oaklands rd, but moving to Byre Ave< somerton park). Speak to Shelley. He usually does a cash deal for about 300 ish.

You need a good rubber squeegee for tint. I am tinting my office windows at moment and getting plenty of flat glass practice too!

Good effort for trying, but, window tinting is not an easy job, and is one job I would rather pay a professional to do.

In saying that, go to a reputable installer. A lot of those that operate a mobile service are not very good, and if you want to complain about the air bubbles, etc, they will never answer their phone again and you will never find them again.

A few of our cars have been done by Scorpion Window Tinting. He can drive to your workplace, collect your car and go back to the workshop. Never had a problem.

The other thing to consider is the type of tint, ink based vs metallic. A good quality metallic tint lasts a long time, 10 years on my last car with no fading.

I agree with the others, good on you for trying but this is one job I'd rather leave to someone else. I can't even get my phone screen protector on straight

I agree, tintacar quoted me $460, but I got a mate who started for himself for $300 as a cashie, now I've seen the video I'm glad I did.........

Thanks for the positive replys.I have ordered a better squeegee before I try again.I also discovered on a tint forum that using pap per to clean the window is a no go.So I have to get some lint free cloth.It is a very difficult job but if I get it to work there is nothing like the feeling of I did it my self.So not beaten yet but not a winner ither.Will post photos when finished.

Well that was the job from h#€l out or all of the windows only the last one worked reasonably well.I think that the quality of the tint film was not that good.It creased real easy and did not stick in some spots.Also you must have a very dust free area and a good dust free spot to hang the film to prepare the transfer to the vehicle.Any way if you don,t try you can never learn,And I will try almost any thing once.

hey, im sure by now you hav your windows finished? but if not got mine done last week by the same guy we always use. They are a 2 man team that come out to where ever you are. done in 1hour. faultless job $250 for the lot. This was done on a 150 series.

For those of you in Melbourne.

I had the windows tinted on my Altitude two weeks ago.

Because of the privacy glass I had clear put on from the passenger doors back & a tint on the front windows.

The clear reduces glare & uv.

The car certainly has a lot less incoming glare.

The job was done by a Pradopoint member - Winesy.

He really looked after me for product knowledge, service & price.

Great bloke.

Liftetime warranty.

He is out in Ferntree Gully - I travelled over from the other side of town & the extra distance was well worth it.
