Landcruiser Mountain Park

Guys,
I'm thinking about taking some time off work and going up to Landcruiser Mountain Park with my son and his mates. Probably camp there for a week or so. I'm after any advice from those who have been there, on anything I should be aware of. I understand that it's quite remote and would like to know if it's worth the trip. Any tips and advice?

It is a great place to play and rest, just dont go on the extreme tracks, as they are always chopped up, and you can be waiting for ages to use the track because some knob in a Patrol has got stuck or broken something, there are plenty of other tracks in the park, if your going to be there for a week, then you need to remember that you will have to drive back to Kilcoy to get fuel (up to 40 min, depending on how you drive), Alternatively try Levuka 4wd park at Urbanville, will be much closer to you and not as many people go to it, so will be much quieter, the tracks are just as good too, and I would say the toilet/shower facilities much better.

Thanks croozza. I will look into Levuka 4WD park although my son and his mates are dead keen on LCMP. It wont worry me, I can relax, eat & drink, while the boys go mad. It sounds like I may need to take a well equiped tool kit with me, as I'm sure the boys will find a way to bend or break something. Would you have any idea when is the least busy time at LCMP?

Like any 4wd park, the least busy time is during the weekdays, weekends can get busy.

You can even try City View 4wd and camping park. Just out of Beaudesert. Has just re-opened with new owners, google them and check it out, they are also on facebook.

Hi Bazza

LCMP has their major event on first week of November Bulls Mud and Music so before and after that for a week or so would be very busy. We have been to Levuka many times and whilst it is a smaller park the facilities are good and there is some good driving there as well. Levuka is likely to be quieter and the nearest town is Urbenville with fuel, limited groceries and a pub all about 15 minutes from Levuka.

Both places have some nice State forests with pleasant drives around them close at hand.

If you're after a quite'ish time then check out the LCMP Calendar and stay away from event weekends...

LCMP isn't what I would call remote and the store is very well stocked. You can go as hard or as tame as you want at LCMP. A week might be a bit long depending on what you intend to do each day... as Richo said there's heaps of local sights to see while you're in the area.

You'll have a blast at LCMP. As Snaga said, it's not remote. It's only 2hrs from Brisbane and about 55 - 60km from Kilcoy which has all the supplies you'd need. You'll be given a colour map clearly marking the different difficulty of each track. You'll have to steer clear of the extreme tracks unless you've got a 6 inch lifted vehicle with great wheel articultion due to deep ruts and aftermarket diff locks. You watch the odd loaner try Camp Rd with std suspension as an example and you'll see what I mean (hung up and slightly bent side steps). It's proably the mildest of the more difficult tracks too. As for all of the medium rated tracks, that's about the limit of the std Prado suspension. The car will do all the medium tracks competently provided the tyres are decent and you choose the right line. The other great thing is none of the tracks have steep drop-offs on the side... They're all built up on the side with rocks & dirt to form gutters to give a safer feel to them.

I'd recommend 2nd gear low range up all of the hills to prevent wheel slip due to the loose large rocks on them.

A week may be a bit too long to stay there though as all of the tracks the Prado can do will be knocked over in a day and a bit.
The quietest times to go are week days. On weekends it can get so busy the lawns out the front of the kiosk become a bit of a carpark at times with people registering or stopping to eat their pre-packed lunch, or waiting to pump their tyres back up. Note: The kiosk there only carries basics so don't rely on them for food and that sort of thing. They sell basic chocolates and some drinks. You'll love it though as it's a pretty cool place.

I did hear from a bloke a few months ago I work with that after the January flooding/rain up Jimna way, a few of the LCMP tracks became heavily rutted with deep ruts and formed deep washouts and some became quite dangerous. He was driving the difficult and extreme tracks in a high lifted competent Patrol and nearly put his car on its side a few times. He only tried the more difficult tracks though which the Prado shouldn't do and said they had a bull dozer out there at the time performing repairs to tracks.

Guys, thanks for all the advise and info.
My Prado is setup for touring, not climbing mountains or playing silly buggers on extreme tracks. I leave that sort of stuff to my son & this mates in their locked and high lifted Patrols, Lux's, and Zoot. I'll be quite happy taking in the less extreme tracks, vegging out over a few beers, and watching the antics of others. I may re-think the amount of time spent there, although just getting there is a trip.

Nearby is peach trees camping area which is cheaper and more of a relaxing/sitting by the river type camp. Close enough for a day trip or two to LCMP.

One thing to watch out for, is if you require recovery on some of the extreme tracks by the park recovery vehicle, it can be very expensive. Its still a good place to go with some excellent camping spots. Enjoy yourselves.

Yeah you could even camp at Peach Trees which is about a 20 min drive from LCMP which is a very likeable campground. You could easily soak up a week there in the serenity as it never gets busy and the only thing you hear is the breeze in the trees. There's approx 1 dozen resident kangaroos always lazing around close by, nice short green grass everywhere. Showers (cold), flushing toilets and a few 4wd tracks with steepish hills leading straight from the campground that are fun and won't damage your car in anyway. I did the tracks about a month ago when we camped there and did all the lantana trimming in parts on our way through the tracks so you need not worry about scratches. There's endless amounts of firewood, nice little birds which you probably hadn't seen before that are inquisitive little buggers and the odd goanna or two. It'd save you a fortune to camp at Peach Trees as compared to LCMP which is a bit of a rip-off to camp there for the week. If you don't camp at Peach Trees, at least give it visit as it's a beautiful little spot. But I think its lastability rating for camping far exceeds LCMP's. You could easily do two day trips to LCMP throughout the week.

I was impressed by the 95 series if it was yours... It looked nice and had a nice sound to it too. I was camped in the middle area with a white 95 series and a silver GU Patrol.

Hey Guys thought you might like to know about this if anyone was thinking about peach trees soon. From the Qld4wd Derm park alerts site.
Peach Trees camping area will be closed during October and November (weather dependant).
The bridge providing access will be replaced between 31st October and 16th December 2011. Affected parks: Jimna State Forest.

Not me no... Ithe last time I was there was a recce for the GTG. I'll still take the compliment for the nice looking 95 series though
