In my experience (sand driving since 1983), if a vehicle is able to drive (at the same or slower speed) where another got bogged, then the reason for bogging is too high tyre pressures and/or too overloaded.

HOWEVER, I've seen plenty of situations where ALL vehicles get bogged unless they keep up momentum (e.g. Ngkala Rocks bypass - Northern Fraser Is - I've just returned from there). In these situations, there is absolutely no alternative but to "drive it like you stole it"...

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one

Be it sand or any other surface there are 3 really important factors in avoiding getting stuck. Wheel placement, tyre pressure and momentum. Its getting the combination of all those things right that allows you to continue where others fail. No 2 situations are the same, even the same piece of sand at different times of the day can be quite different.

Back to the original question, take some maxtrax, the odd safe recovery is all part of the fun.

      Cheers Andrew

When I swapped from the H/T's to a set of LT A/T's I ran the same pressure I always had first time on the beach and we got bogged on the first exit off the beach, mate who was there suggested dropping them lower so we did and didn't have a problem after that, and only because the LT's are stiffer and don't bag out as much.
