  • dilemma, hilux or Prado

I have a 2008 Toyota Hilux SR5 as a work vehicle. But have the option of swapping it for a 2010 Prado GX, this is because i have taken on a promotion.

    Any thoughts guys

    Cheers

You are probably going to get a biased response in this forum..

What do you want it for? They both have strengths in different areas.

I found when we were looking that the Hilux was to small in the backseat for our teenages, otherwise it probably would have been a hilux for us.
I suppose it luck that got me here.

Capability and features can be improved, what's really important is your lifestyle:
            - Hilux for regular carting of dirty gear, tools, bikes, garden stuff.
            - Prado for families, or single/couple touring & sleeping in car.

If they are auto then 4sp vs 5sp. Also permanent 2wd/4wd vs permanent 4wd. Based on my mates car the Hilux is a generation older and just all round a more agricultural car.

Like others said depends on what youll use it for.

Well we use them for going onto mine sites. We do carry dirty stuff, it has a canopy but these arnt sealed so all the dust gets into the rear, so really usless when we go away. the Prado has a rubber lining in the back, so i can carry dirty stuff. I also have a trailer that can be used instead of the tray, for the yard clean up days.

I have a family of 4, 2 kids under 6. i find putting the booster seats in each weekend in the Hilux very frustrating, with the way i have to lift the seat to attach the strap.

Oh and the ride of the Hilux is terrible, im hoping the Prado is significantly better.

I think after reading this back i have already made my mind up.

I replaced my dual cab ranger with a prado after the handbrake told me to get a wagon 6 mths after our little fella came to be.
wish I done the change sooner mines the 07 gx model and goes everywhere my mates hilux goes only easier and in more comfort and it tows the trailer with ease on and off road
also because you need to tow a trailer its alot easier to convince the handbrake for the need for a winch to be fitted

Having just traded my 2007 Hilux SR5 TD 5spd dual-cab for my fathers 2007 Prado GXL TD auto, I may have some helpful comments. After having quite a string of vehicles over the years, I could've easily died and gone to heaven in my 'Lux. I could've easily traded it and gone another. I have entertained the idea of upgrading the 'Lux for a 150 series, but there were a couple of things that went for and against it, apart from my father unexpectantly finding a new 200 GXL at the right price. Most dealers were telling me that average delivery time for a new 150 was about 4-5 months, I preferred the extral fuel capacity of the 120 over the 150, I miss the full trip computer of the SR5 which I didn't get with the 120, the 120 GXL has a 6CD stacker whereas the 150GXL does not nor is an option, I still need about $5k spare for bar, dual batt & suspension, I prefer the look of the ARB 120 bar compared to the ARB 150 bar (given that I'll need to mount quite a few antennas), I prefer the fibreglass flares of the 120 over the solid wheelarches of the 150, the 'Lux was unbreakable and was easy to get in and out of, I wish the top of the centre console of the 150 was similar to the 200 instead of the strange Korean look, the 150 has some nice new tricks & features, a lot more cargo room than in a hard-lid equipped tub of a Hilux, the Hilux is a very noise-free environment for HF radio ops, it goes on.... add it all up and turn it upside down - I love the 120 as a total fit for me. Everyone has different needs and desires, but the 120 is better for me for now. I thought the 'Lux was good, but the 120 is a jet - I love the way the auto works but I hate the controls of the cruise control - they should be buttons on the surface of the steerting wheel instead of a perceived add-on. But then, it's the same with the 200 as well. I would've at least liked to see a Distance to Empty on the 120GXL. But with 180 litres on board, who cares :-)

Trying not to be biased, upgrade to a Prado if you can!! Another thing, I've found the bluetooth function on most factory stereos are crap - just fit a Nokia bluetooth kit instead and be done with it.

Final word, if you can stretch yourself to a 200 series, go for it!! These things are a weapon! But this is a Prado forum... :-)

                        Cheers,

New Hilux now has traction Control I believe Prado's are marginally better off road now maybe even with the TC in the Lux,but Prado's are nicer on road...Both great though

Yeah i travel to Cobar in western NSW every month for work so i do alot of dirt and highway travel, in all weather conditions. Thats why i think the Prado will be better in the long run.
