  • Recovery Kit - what rate equipment?

    Hi All

Sorry if this has been answered before, had a search and couldnt find anything.

Im looking at getting a recovery kit with the usual snatch strap and shackles but have seen different ratings for the strap and D shackles so whats the generally recommended amount for a Prado?

Seen straps of about 8000kg, and shackles of abour 4.7t

    What do you think?

    Cheers

I always go for a strap higher rated than that, look at a 10000 rated strap. The shackles will be fine
...If its not on all 4's it's not on.....

I was told (on a 4WD course) and have also read, that going too high a rating on a snatch strap is not a good idea as you don't get the snatch effect (don't have the force to overcome the stretch in the strap). I was told 8,000 kg was the go for a Prado snatch strap. Don't know if it's true though

Trekrider is correct. Get a kit with all the standard ratings,eg, 4.7T, 8T straps, 12T tree trunk. You only need higher if you've got a very heavy rig. Even the heavier Patrols use 8T.

Thanks Glen, also the Tree Trunk Protector can be used as a bridle for the front of the car - that's actually what I got mine for before I had the winch.

I use an 8T strap with a 4.7T shackle if required. The 8T straps work perfectly and I have never ever broken one. I think you'd be pretty unlucky to break one unless you've perforated it previously on sharp rocks, used it for a million recoveries, frequently packed it away wet and dirty or left it out in the sun for months on end when not in use. I like to give mine a quick clean with the hose when I get home if it's dirty after use, then let it dry before packing it away. I just replaced my 4 year old strap with a brand new one. There was nothing wrong with it but it was just a precaution.

Agree with you there Brett. Stew, you will see in the mag's and some suppliers will tell you that you should replace a snatch strap once it has been used ten times - that's just revenue raising. Provided you look after it like Brett says it will last years.

After seeing some heavy duty snatching, I think replacement of a snatch strap after 10 uses is good insurance. I can understand holding on to it longer if being used for soft recoveries and you know the full history of the strap, but I'm not prepared to risk life and limb to save 80 bucks on a snatch strap.

Mine had written on the packaging when I bought it, "Discard after 20 uses." I often thought how funny it would be if you tried to snatch a bloke out with your only strap for it's 20th use, and when unsuccessful the first attempt, you cut the strap up and threw it in the back of the car because it it said to discard after 20 uses. I used mine probably 40 times over 4 years and there was nothing wrong with it. I'd be more concerned then anything else with snatching soft roaders from the tie down points to be honest. For those cars I prefer to use a chain and pull them out gently just in case the tie down point breaks off.

Like I said, I looked after it and when snatching I never tried to rip the guy's chassis out from under him either.

OK thanks guys, will look at kits with an 8T strap. Re what Brett mentions, yes im not keen on using the tie downs, so will be fitting some outback adventures recovery points before venturing off road.

I suppose I have used mine in heavy duty circumstances, like snatching friends patrol and for comp use,(not in prado of coarse) so that's why I use a heavier strap

I use two 3.2T to attach the bridle and a 4.75T on the hitch end. Pass the bridle through the end of the snatch strap - DO NOT USE A SHACKLE HERE.

                              Ditto

SWMBO bought me a knew 8T snatch after 15 years and countless uses of my last one. It is light blue from washing but was a deep blue prior. Only reason its out is it got shredded on the last outing and I don't want those sort of risks.

PS I would use my shit strap before using a 10+. The spring effect is related to energies (kinetic etc) and a too higher rated strap will just yank rather than stretch and snatch. My 2 cents anyway and thats why the guys at ARB strongly suggested the 8T over two larger ones.
