Water ingress to the male socket under the car would always be a risk, and i doubt you find a spark willing to but their name to it.

Ok, thanks guys, as I think mentioned, we have only had the frig in the Prado for about 3 weeks of touring, and so are very much learning and trying things out. The idea of the window "weathershield" is a good one, and yes we did take some nights without power (when it was available) as we progressed, and got over the fact that we weren't going to run the [single] car battery flat.
When we did 'connect', we used a heavy duty 240 volt cable to the tent which connects to an Earth Leakage Detector , then I have been running a second 240v heavy duty extension lead off to the car, and in the back door near the wheel arch. We were also travelling with a smallish 6A battery charger, and had contemplated connecting that to the car's battery system and so replacing the charge at the 12v level (via the engine bay), rather than using the 240v cable in the door.[but I don't like the idea of running that all the time either!]
...and would guess that we will ultimately be doing the same thing, although there must occasionally be times for many when the situation demands getting 240v into the car safely [extended stays? etc?].Originally posted by alternative View PostI used to do the lead jammed in the door but your fridge is drawing a couple of amps per hour, if you are taking the vehicle out for a run everyday or even every second day i dont even bother plugging it in at all now.
[BTW, when mentioning the 240v plug from the I was assuming on some route through the interior of the car, down the side door channels etc, and not underneath the vehicle, but appreciate that with normal vehicle vibration, any sharp edge could prove fatal].
Many thanks for all the great comments and suggestions, which I think "solve" the issues admirably.
Again, Many thanks,
