  • NEW Rules for Tyre Sizes Nationally?

    Hey Guys.....
Hoping someone here may know, but there is supposed to be some national rules being bought in for various modifcations to your vehicles & one being the allowable increase in tyre size of I think 50mm. Currently here in Qld it's only legally 15mm I believe....

Has anyone heard anything along these lines at all? Coming up for new tyres soon and would like to take advantage of a bigger tyre size

When they say national rules each state's Dept of Transport still has to adopt them, QLD has been reviewing them for years now

NSW still hasn't accepted NCOP, so we're still 15mm unless engineered.

When I was up for new tyres I called the dot mods department and asked them about it and he said they have agreed to it but yet to adopt. I asked what time frame? (this was in July 2011) and he said was supposed to be jan 11 then was supposed to be June 11 but still no luck. If you are getting new tyres I think it's safer to just get what's legal now. And not necessarily what could be in x amount of time

          Hope this is of interest

When have all the state governments ever agreed on anything. It would great if they did adopt this nationwide, I am not holding my breath though.

I have been speaking with a number of RTA (now RMS) people for a few years about all of this.

Interestingly, I received an email 2 weeks ago from the Manager, Regulatory Strategy & Reform of RMS, stating:

"Modifiers who follow (VSB) 14 can expect that their vehicle will comply with the applicable vehicle standards set out in NSW law."

I have gone back to him asking for clarification of that specific point, particularly in relation to tyre sizes, however it would suggest to me that you are now able to fit larger tyres up to 50mm increased diameter - albeit with the limitation (NCOP, LS, section 4.11), that the tyre size increase and suspension lift combined can only give you 50mm lift total. Basically means you can only have a 25mm suspension lift if you fit the largest possible tyres.

That said, I expect him to respond saying his comment has been taken out of context or some such......

Under VSB 14 4wd's can be lifted up to 150mm made up of 50mm of body lift + 75mm of suspension lift + 25mm tyre lift (50mm increase in diameter) if it is certified under the Vehicle Safety Compliance Certification Scheme (VSCCS)

Yes, if you want to go down the engineering path that is correct. (Should have mentioned in my post above that I was referring to non-engineered mods).

It is 50mm combined maximum without engineering. (And with the quotes I've had, engineering will cost you over $600 if bigger tyres are involved....).

I have been informed that VSB 14 hasn't been officially adopted by the RTA/RMS and VSI 9 rev 4 still applies to tyres in NSW. However, when I said that since there is currently no VSI that covers suspension mods, that means that I can mod my suspension as I please, the RTA/RMS told me that I could expect NSW to adopt VSB 14 for suspension mods and in the meantime, consult an engineering signatory. Cunch of useless Bunts the RTA are. VSB 14 takes into account both suspension and tyres together. You can't take part of VSB 14 and VSI 9 and combine them because they are different legislations.

With any luck, those shiny bum pencil pushing oxygen theives in the RTA will make a decision one way or the other and produce some literature that we can use. In the meantime, getting your vehicle engineered may be a woftam if the RTA changes the rules.
