Flags on vehicles. Patriotic or Racist?

Okay, have posted this thread simply to satisfy my own curiosity as yesterday I went to work as normal and my boss happened to remark about having heard on the ABC morning news that people who attatch Australian Flags to their cars have more racist views than people who don't display flags.

So with Australia Day just round the corner, what does the pp community think of flags on cars?
Personally I have no problem with them, havn't got one on my prado this year but have put them up in the past.
The problem I can see arising here is that people may see people who fly their flags as ALL having racist views regardless that many people only display them around our national day.
Sorry mods I know ive probably opened a can of worms here but would love to know what my fellow pp's think.

I take offense at that .... I'm not a racist, I hate everyone equally! Don't get too wound up about what the media reports. Good news don't sell papers, but sensationalism does!

Ok I'll open the delicate can of politically correct worms!! I heard a snippet of that story ie the headline and went straight out and bought 3 flags!! Patriotic not racist! I love my country and i am absolutely horrified that anyone could even think flying our wonderful flag in patriotic acknowledgment of Australia day would in any way indicate racist inclinations. What a croc! Fly your flags freely and proudly I say!

Quite simple really, this is just another manipulation of facts by the media!

The research simply found that a significant number of those "513 revellers" who were interviewed in WA had some racist feelings. This does not make all flag bearers racist.

The media loves creating hype like this near Australia day, it happens every year. Shame on them.

Depending on the person, there can be a blurring between attitudes of "patriotism" and "racism"...

I think alot of people [media] get racial discrimination confused with racial bigotry. As a nation we generally aren't a discriminating nation and govt policies dictate and support this,but some folk may be intolerent to a particular racial group and this may be seen as racial bigotry.The problem is that as we are
becoming a nanny state nation that seems to be scared to upset some of the minority groups in our society at the expense of our anglo/christain heritage. I also think some people only think that a flag belongs at the top of a flagpole and not on a t shirt or car window. Me i am a descendant of the original 'invasion' party to arrive in 1788, in fact a descendant of the only black africian on the first fleet, [Govenor Phillip brought his own blackboy with him] and i am proud of my heritage and our flag.Fly it you out the window or paint it on your nails as my daughter has just done and tell those who don't like it to go get a life in this great country

Hmm a point D4D, seems so many opinions can create tensions that can lead to anger hence racism against others' opinions... democracy is a treacherous thing ain't it
btw took me few mins to get the septics remark, remember my parents telling me that as a kid..
guess the media does like to stir the pot from time to time though. Too lazy to go and find some real stories. But a nation without free speech means no pradopoint.....

Anybody including non Australian born folks that embrace our culture and way of life should be proud to display their appreciation to live in one of the greatest countries in the world.

Many non Australians that take out citizenship will also be happy to show their appreciation to be an Aussie.

Finally Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie oy oy oy let's get out and enjoy and be proud of the country we live in.
