  • How Mechanically Minded Are We (Test)

Found this in another site recently, although I passed the test I must admit I had a bit of brain fade.
    (88% could have been better)
Good for a giggle, so lets see how you do :?: :?: :?: :?:

    How did you go :?:

Hope you had some educational fun,

80% with a lot of guessing. I know I failed all of the electrical switch questions,

              90% here.

Got to go back and review them. Some tricky ones in there. Just have to think what answer they really want. Sometimes there are 2 correct answers. But one is more correct than the other.

              Thanks for that. very interesting.

.I got Q7 wrong. I guess its how you look at it. But 3 are reversing in their direction
Q26. DERR. path of least resistance....
Q38. . might test that one.
Q39. didnt know friction was a mechanical motion principal
Q48. If the piston didnt go down the atmosphere couldnt push it it...bit Like the chicken and the egg that one..

I was 50/50 on most of those I got wrong. All bar 26 & 38.

80% for me. i have an issue with q.15 though. the one with the pulleys. Surley running through a pulley and back will reduce the load by half??
Is this not the principle of the snatch block. ops:

36% Using the law of averages. Didn't read a single one just clicked away.

Might go back and read them now but I am scared I might get even less.

Well after a few beers with the father-in-law who is a physics teacher I have seen the error of my ways regarding the snatch block ops: .

Need two to get an advantage.

Might just crawl under a rock....

Please ask your father-in-law why there is mechanical advantage in using a single snatch block when winching and attaching the end back to the vehicle

if you used a snatch block between the winching vehicle and another vehicle next to it there is no advantage. 1 meter of cable represents 1 meter of movement of the vehicle geting winched. same as if the 2 vehicles were facing each other, just your bending the pull direction.
If the winching vehicle went through a snatch and back to itself it would 1/2 the load. 1 meter of cable would represent 1/2 a meter of movement.
                            hope that helps.

Yep Jeff that was how it was explained to me.
Twice the length= half the force needed.

Or something along those lines...... :?
