  • Unavoidable dents

After managing to keep my Prado reasonably dent free for 12 months (excluding the off-road "pin stripes"), I scored 2 bits of damage in 2 days without trying.

Sitting at the traffic lights waiting to turn right on Saturday, a truck came past on my left and a loose strap put a nice dent and scratch in the rear passenger door. Then on Sunday driving down the freeway, a truck a few cars ahead of me had a blowout and I scored some nice scratches in the front bumper from flying debris.

I've tried to tell myself that its only a car and dents are inevitable, but its doubly annoying when someone else puts dents in your car and there is nothing you can do. My wife on the other hand can't see what the fuss is all about.

Not quite as bad, but my wife has a problem with our letterbox. Several years ago she jumped in the truck after we had a few words and drove straight over the top of the 1 metre tall, 2 metre wide brick letter box, completely destroying it then asked me what happened to it after she returned from her mothers a few hours later.

Then last year she side swiped the new you beaut replacement letterbox, deeply gouging the whole left hand rear panel of the bumper bar. Luckily we have the RV model with the grey bumper, it just looks like an old war wound.

I've managed to successfully remove a number of dents with a glue pulling kit. They are inexpensive and if the dent is not severe (no metal creasing), they often come right out. Fraction of the cost of taking the car to a body shop. Don't think you can buy them readily in Aust. though - I go mine from the US.

I've used a local dent removal guy a few times, amazing what he can do.

Unfortunately both bits of damage include paint damage

Iv'e given up, people are so careless these days. The lastest is after a trip to Dan Murphy's we came out to see one of their shopping trolly's impailed into the front guard and gutter. Some clueless nub had put it against the wall of a very slopped footpath.

My wife had go yesterday. She took off to the shops, came back and walked in and said (crying hard), "I hurt you car, it's horrible". Well part of me got up tight, but I said to her, it is just a car, and asked if she was ok....
I went outside in the pouring rain, to be shown big white marks on the rear drivers wheel arch moldings.... I was actually expecting, given the tears,
a bumper hanging off, or maybe a big dent in the sov bar...grabbed a rag, and wiped most of the white paint off, leaving a few tiny marks through the paint, and said to her, see, I've got bigger scratches from the bush., let's go have a drink.....

It is all good, it is just a car, a nice car, expensive car, but still, jut car.. It can be fixed..

Firstly if it was me I would have been off after the truck driver pulled him up at next intersection and proceeded to show him the damage, his load including straps should be secured, Ive followed a dog years ago that ran out in front of me and I hit it but didnt kill it and it took off and I followed till it limped in its driveway and I went to explain what happened and was willing to walk off when the owner become a smart arse with you should watch out and drive slower and all the rest of the shit, told him it shouldnt have been running around on a major road and lucky it wasnt a truck that hit it, so I then informed him he would be paying for a new bumper bar. They payed for a new bumper bar and dog was fine.
I had a deadshit one day who decided to put there full load of shopping on my rear boot lid of my 2 day old brand new s pack supercharged commodore then try and slide it off over my rear spoiler, dont think my wife has ever seen me so wild, said to the person are you f***ing kidding me, he said it was easier to slide off to get his hand under it then proceeded to tell me its only a car. I then proceeded to tell them to get them off my boot in two seconds or his bags of grocerys are going to become missles on top of his roof, tin cans and all.
I also had a man one day here in my local car park decide to just open the door of his new prado grande (120) and slam it into the car next to me while i was waiting for my wife, I got out and checked out the little getz (hyundai) and there was a good size dent in the passengers door of the new car, I knocked on his door and he opened his window and I said are you right there just slamming your door into the car, he said was it mine i said no but does it matter have some respect he said its a carpark what do you expect, told him if it was my car by about now he'd have my knee in his two side doors about now and my fist in his rear quarters, he just told me to F*** off and it wasnt my car, so out come my phone took pic of it parked next to it and his number plate before he took off. reported it and waited a while but had to go then left my ph number and name of the door handle of the car (wedged it in) never heard anything.
People piss me off when they have no respect for other peoples things doesnt matter what it is. If I put a dent in my own car or scratch it then its my problem and live with it.
We try and park next to a poll at least one side i then protected and I dont try and park at the door, its not that hard to walk a tad from the car unless obviously your disabled. Even my 3 year old when walking past my prado in the garage if some one is carrying some thing she will tell them to be carfull of daddys car, dont scratch it lol needless to say it will cop them like the other two prados did once its set up for off road but it teached her to respect and be careful of things around her......
Dont get me started on shopping trolleys, I normally hoy them if some one is so lazy to leave next to my car for the next person to wedge it into it................. Cheers Steve

Yeah mate no respect for anyone elses stuff, just lazy pricks dont want to walk and put it back where it belongs. I always park on the up hill run of a carpark so if a trolley lets go it doesnt run towards my car. I hate my local carpark bigtime, I can go over at 10pm and park at the bottom out the way and an bet my balls on it some jerk off has to park write next to me when theres a shit load of unused spots, unbelievable, or the parents that let there kids go riding on the back of it with a full load and then it gets away on the child and bang, Bigfella and BB from here would know exactly what I mean as they use the same carpark....Cheers Steve

When my Discovery 3 was 3 days old someone parked next to it & put a dent in the passenger front door.
This was up at Sugarloaf Dam & to make it worse it was another Landrover owner.
I had parked my car literally 100m away from everyone else.
When I fronted him about it he just plain denied it, fortunately for him it was a work environment & I just had to walk away.
The inconsiderate prick was an engineer so you would have thought he had some principles.
My only revenge was every document he submitted thru my team was sent back for review over & over.

I have seen how some of the people at my work treat there brand new company cars. Makes me wonder do they treat there own family car the same ?? I would never buy a comapny car if I was after a car from where I work, yes there serviced well but thats it. Im talking one boss who thinks even though he's not supposed to smoke in his own company cars (policy) to smoke in it, ash on the floor if its raining or outside when its not, but thinks the rubber/plastic weather strip along top of door edge is ok for stubbing his smokes out then sticking in the side door pocket and sticking his chewing gum on the side of his seat (I kid you not) and Im talking about a brand new V series calais, if I was the boss id be taking the keys from him untill he had some respect........Cheers Steve

I used to get really angry about damage, but I've tried to chill a bit lately. There really are more important things to spend energy on, although that's easier said than done. Ultimately a damaged car can be fixed or replaced.

Speaking of company cars, a long time ago when I was a trainee with a large company one of the other trainees used to try to redline the engine in company cars before the oil light went off. He thought it was a big joke and really didn't give a s$@t, but he would have been the first to complain if someone messed with his stuff.
