  • Waterproof ICOM hand held radios - Whereabouts in Sydney for a good price?

My wife saw an advert in a caravan magazine for a 'new' hand held waterproof ICOM radio. I am looking for something like that for the outback, kayaking and fishing, so when she wants to contact me should I be in a different location (eg dinner is ready, the red is open, come and get it) it is easily done without the need for yelling.

    Are they really waterproof?

Are there other brands that are waterproof and good value, and any shops or suppliers in the Sydney area (or elsewhere) with good prices?

    Thanking you,

    Yowie.

    Hi Yowie,

I'm not sure of any information on the ICOM Waterproof Handheld. However it looks like it's only available in VHF Frequency. I have attached a link to a website in perth that I used to buy my Icom 41-S Handheld from. I found them the best on price and had a quick delivery. Hope this helps.

        Thanks guys.

I sent an email to the company, no reply yet.

The radio is advertised in the latest edition of 'On The Road' camping magazine, however, it is not yet on the ICOM website!

Will have a look at Prestige.

Received a reply from ICOM. The model is UHF frequency, reasonable range, 15 hour battery life, water submersible (1 metre depth for 30 minutes), plenty of good points about it, BUT, about $470 each (and I want 2 of them).

I've heard good reports about Prestige too. Got mine from Gadget City (cheaper at the time and Sydney based) but not much good to you as they don't sell Icom.

If you don't want to pay the new toy premium, my advice would be to wait until these have been on the market for a while. There still aren't many 80ch 5W handhelds out there so hopefully prices will come down with a bit more competition.
