  • Front or Back locker/Toughdog

Hi all, I went to day to get some quotes on suspension, locker and get snorkel fitted. I wont mention the different stores as Im not bagging either of them BUT the snorkel Im still thinking of doing myself, doesnt look that hard and I did fit one to my hilux myself and turned out ok just need toget hold of quit a large holesaw. I actually went for a run in another 120 prado today only difference over mine was steel bullbar but was using toughdog, and to be really honest it felt like a great ride (waiting on email with a quote) Now I have read on here and other forums they wouldnt touch tuff dog stuff ?? I cant comment as I have never ever used it before. Now the locker has me stumped. Both stores were extremely head strong in which diff I should go first. One said the front diff without fail, it will help pull you through, you have the weight over the diff from the engine its a no brainer, the other store was totally opposite, rear first then front if I want to get another down the track. Now the first store were refering to how well a nissan with front locker goes, I said yes but nissans limo will shit all over a toyota limo with out fail. he said my choice (obviously), one was E Locker the other was an air locker BUT not fitted by ARB. Both sales people were extremely helpful and not knocking them either way. I like the sound of the elocker with less things to go wrong BUT I have been in Declans 90 with rear ARB locker and can say that locker transformed the vehicle into some thing very capable. I know this has probably been asked before on the web/google some where but I want answers from people with prados, not patrols or cruisers as where talking two different very vehicles when refering to IFS compared to live axle's front and back........Cheers Steve

well steve if you want so opinions on toughdog suspension flick matt a pm ,he has used tough dog on the front of his 120, (well struts i know of )and they also use them at his work, as for the locker i did my rear (arb) it made a big difference in how far the 120 will go offroad, im not going to worry about the front locker as mine gets me where i want to go, if i get stuck i just get the winch out, either way you go you will get further then a std 120, if in doubt do front and rear , if you want info on the front locker how it steers and performs, pm damonat, hes got a front arb and has a lockrite in the rear, and if all else fails come and have a drive of mine and see what ya reackon. cheers samo

Good ay Steve, yeah mate no problems with telling price on here $1950 either front or back for the elocker and basically its the same as fitting the locker itself to the diff centre. They then run two wires directly from battery (fused) to the switch then from the switch to the elocker conections (again fused) and thats it and said he has had no warranty issues what soever. He wasnt bagging ARB's locker but just said less to go wrong with elocker....The ARB locker was $1950 for the front and think it was $1750 for the rear and that is with the free air compressor till the end of february, you still get the deal even if ARB are not fitting it, I am waiting on two quotes from actually 2 different stores and one personal workshop at 7 hills. Will then decide which way I will go. one thing I did notice today with the prado I drove it had mickey t's on it, one under the muddies, friggn noisy and had a fair amount of tread on them so would hate to here them when they get down some........Cheers Steve PS WIll copy the quotes and post on here tomorrow when I receive them

Cheers Samo, will flick him a PM. I dont have the $$ for two lockers (I wish) so that wont be happening (maybe down the track) hence why I want to find out in which diff will give me the best off road advantage. Cheers Steve

OME is good, TJM is good, Bilstiens are good, Fox racing is great............ just depends on your budget!

                      Cheers Andrew

For the suspension go either EFS or OME, you will not be dissapointed.
For the locker, go for the air locker, and always put it in the rear first, unless you likereplacing CV's or diff centres.
I have F & R air lockers and the way they work is that the rear comes on first, because most times you need the locker is going up hill, and all the weight of the vehicle will be on the rear. If you were in SEQLD I'd show you how good they are.
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

Hi there croozza, I have always used OME 2 previous prados and one hilux and 2 sukz, most of the time it has been between $1500 to $2000 for supply and fit, Ive been thinking and talking to wife and to be honest due to warranty and availablity if in the outback i'm leaning towards the OME again even though I have never ever used the warranty. I have been reading up on the other links Andrew posted up for me and Im leaning towards rear locker due to the exact reason you have just described. How often do you use a locker going down hill (on dry stuff anyway) ?? probably 10% compared to using it for climbing some thing and the first thing when climbing some thing (well what Ive experianced anyway) is the front wanting to lift up ?? Even typing this has made me think for sure the back makes sense first. Cheers Steve

I generally allow around $1500 to $2000 Personally I wont pay anymore. I can get Bilstien for just over two grand but again Im not sure they really are any better then say OME, maybe they are I dont no never had them BUT I have been in a prado with then and did seem a tad less in the harshness not loaded, but loaded my old 90 sat better then my mates did with bilstiens and king springs and we roughly had the same load (actually we had an extra person in the back) he ended up running airbags in the rear to assist.. Maybe the king springs are a tad softer then the OME ?? might explain why I felt the bilstien/kings set up rode slightly better with less harshness..Cheers Steve

In the case of the FJ video posted in this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-road-question I'm thinking that a front locker might be useful if there was only 1 front tyre getting traction to pull the FJ across the crevasse?
