changing from hi to lo. help please

i'm looking for some help. when changing from hi to lo in an auto it changes ok, however when moving back (low to high at the point when the lever moves from right to left) up it crunches. i can feel the grearing spinning. the vehicle isn't moving and the gear lever is in neutral.
i drove another auto and it also crunched a little.
i should add that this is a car i'm thinking of buying.the dealer reckons that it's possibly never been put into low range and here in the u.k. thats possible, however i want a second opinion.

All my Toyota auto's have crunched a little bit when changing to lo. If the change is a a bit sticky, you may find yourself jerking the lever causing the gears to crunch. If you are not happy, get it checked out.
