hahahaha, OK I'll knock this on the head. Its way to far for me to drive back to get any wheels ;-).

I wasnt involved in the accident at all either, just saw the aftermath.

Yes, know that ... but did you and your family get out of the suburb unscathed?

I have a feeling nobody was in the vehicle when it hit the tree. May have been stolen or had a drunk driver, put it in reverse while still at speed, broke the transmission so it had no gears and just rolled on down the road untill it hit something. With nobody in the vehicle the airbags woud not go off.

Interested to find out if as the tree hit the middle and the bar crumpled around it, that the crumple zones on the bar didn't deform and then set off the airbags? I saw a 120 with a Sovereign bar rear end a Rodeo last week and the bags went off but the damage was across the whole front of the car and didn't look to have even reached the engine, maybe the comment about nobody in the car was correct and that the airbags only go off in conjunction with sensors in the seat?

See ya on the tracks, Richo. (Hopefully with no trees involved)

I have a steel ARB winch bar and checked out behind it and found what looks like the crash impact sensors, one each attached to the front of the chassis rails.

Resisted the urge to give one a hit to test the theory!!

From the crash pictures, perhaps the bar hadn't deformed sufficiently to trigger the sensor which I would guess are directly behind the rubber uprights on the front of the bar. A foot either side of that impact or a more square on whack across the whole bar may set them off.

have to agree about sensors not being triggered.
But as far as the bar collapsing like that, isn`t that the whole point, crumple zone, absorb impact ect. Its a pretty focused impact point, I would be more worried if the bar hadn`t deformed. Ultimately something has to give and it should be everything in front of the safety cell so its good to see that the driver cabin doesn`t look deformed at all and the doors should open ok.

Was there blood on the steering wheel? This may or may not prove if there was someone in the driver's seat at the time of impact.

Would hope that a 150 would activate the air bags after a hit like that.

It would be interesting to hear Toyota's reason why the bags did not activate with one of their 'approved' bull bars fitted.

Nope, no blood on the steering wheel and no impact to the windscreen that I could see

Perhaps if there been a winch or even just a winch cradle fitted, the force of the impact would have been transmitted to the crush cans and triggered the airbags. The standard bumper has a bar between the chassis rails, the Sovereign just has an alloy c-section. Toyota should have fitted all Sovereign bars with a winch cradle as standard for extra strength.

I currently have a winch cradle kit sitting in the garage. It is quite a hefty unit (about 20kg) and will go towards providing extra strengthening to the alloy bullbar.
