  • Electronic Rust Prevention

    G'day Everybody,

I've just been to the Brisbane 4x4 show and decided to buy an ERPS to fit to my Prado as I go to Fraser Island and camp on the beach each year.
Has anyone fitted one of these systems, are they really as effective as they are made out to be?.

    Cheers,
    Foxo.

As an ex mechanic, I saw all sorts if thear things fitted to cars. We did fit them for a short period but stopped as we felt we were ripping people off.

In my opinion they are a scam and have seen rust appear and grow on regular customers cars that had them fitted, no better or wose than cars that do not have these things fitted.

On a few I have even seen rust appearing around the screws that hold the unit to car. So if it is not working in such close proximity to the unit I can not see how it is going to protect the rest of the car.

So... Based on what I have observed they are in the scam basket with hyclones, and Brocky's Polarizer thing from the 80's

My ex work Rodeo has had one fitted since new. It does work. Stone chips and scratches don't rust. Well actually they do but instead of the red rust haematite you get black magnetite which is more stable and doesn't keep attacking the base metal.

Would I bother to fit one to the Prado? No.

Just sold a 5yo prado with it on, the paint was just like new, the only rusty bits was the screws attached to the plastics hence isolated from the current flow, I have just put a couplertec unit on my new truck.

Hutch, your reply came through after I had replied to the other 2 posts, I am glad that you got a positive result.
I am going to fit the system as I already have it at home.

            Cheers,

My currently 8 year old prado's paint is like new with no rust protection.

Sorry hutch but using your reasoning I could claim my coffee table is great at keeping lions away as since I've had it I have not seen one lion.

This comment has not been written to offend, just point out MY view that car companies have gotten very good at getting many years out of their cars before rust sets in. Therefore, your car MAY look the same without it having the rust protection fitted in the first place, as I'm sure if I chucked out my coffee table I would not be attacked by a lion while watching the evening news.

Having said that each to their own using their own experience to make a choice. I have made mine.

I became a convert about 15 years ago. Back then I had a BJ40 LC that was riddled with rust. I had it all cut out only to return within a year. My father took the car of my hands to tow the boat the 500m to his local boat ramp. Being retired and a sheet metal worker he again repaired all the rust. Six months later it was returning. He put on an electronic rust protection system, not sure what brand but it was just one of the one pad units. Within a month all the rusting areas had turned black and while I will not say it stopped the process it dramatically slowed it down. He had the vehicle another 4 years before selling it with no further need for rust repairs.

I will not own a 4x4 without one now. My choice of unit is the EARPS 10 pad.

That said I also have a coffee table and have not seen a Lion so Robbo may be on to something there he he.

This topic will need to go into the Religion, Politics, Waeco V Engel and DC to DC charger basket. We all will have to agree to disagree.

                Cheers

That's because all those late model 40/45/47s are made out of terrible steel.

Happy ERPS owner here, had it on our 150 since new and had one on our previous cars as well.

Has anyone who bought an electronic rust preventer also bought an energy polariser for their prado?

Not sure about the ones you are talking about but when I used to sell cars (in a previous life) we sold rust interior and paint protection for $995 which we got charged $135 for at the dealership-Complete waste of money which I told the customers therefor never sold any on the cars that I sold and probably explains why I only lasted 6 months in the industry (due to the bs you had to tell people but I learnt alot).

I'm in an industry that has probably spent millions of dollars on electronic corrosion protection. I used to work in the same branch as a group of people who's sole job was to design, fit and maintain several types of protection systems that work on the same principal as what I/they understand the ERPS system does. None of these people think it gives any protection to a normal car. Even though a couple of them own 4WDs, none have installed on their cars. They probably have combined close to 100 years of experience in the subject.

If the car was permanently covered in a film of water or layer of salt then possibly OK (possibly that's why advertisements from salt mining cars or people that live on a beach give it glowing reports). Or if you live somewhere with 100% humidity (not 99%) 100% of the time.

So the way I look at it, the cleaner your car and the further from the beach, the less it works.

                            That’s the science.

Had an 80 series Cruiser for 17 years, and used the spray on rust proofing. Helped a mate's cousin apply it to the vehicle, so I know the job was done properly.

Through water crossings to 6 inches below the bonnet, and not a spot of rust when I sold it.

I was told the dealership applied sprays should be avoided, as quite often it was a 5 minute job for a big money earn.

The 150 has a spray on rust proofing, 2 hours to apply and so far, so good. Applied by a bloke with 25 years in the business from Caringbah.
