  • Is the Prado a real 4WD????????

Those that believe that the Prado is lacking 4WD prowess need to watch 4WD actions DVD featuring the TJM 150 Prado. One DVD is where they took it to the Cape, another to NSW. They totally hammered the Prado and it was awesome. I spoke to someone who was part of the support team who owned a Patrol and was amazed at what they put the Prado through and how it came through with flying colors, He told me, it never faltered once. He fact he was so impressed with the 150 he was going to sell his patrol and buy a Prado. The TJM Prado had a lift and the suspension package plus a chip.....thats it. Everywhere Roothy and Milo went the Prado went. In my Prado I have a 2" lift kit......ARB shocks and springs, dual Batteries, outback drawers, after market recovery points, snorkel, diff breathers front and rear, ARB steel bull bar, IPF spots, ARB bash plates, roof rack, side rails. I will be getting rear lockers and a chip. Gotta love the Prado....lol

I've seen some prados do things that the patrol and landcruiser guys can't. Imo they are an offroad beast. good dvd too.

The Prado doesn't make a good base vehicle for serious modifications like the Patrol, but as stock standard or lightly modified 4wds go, the Prado can certainly keep up with the best of them.

I think the perception of the Prado as a "soft" 4by comes from demographic that buys Prados. Lets face it, most Prados boasting ARB bars and Safari snorkels, spend their lives in shopping malls and and school kiss and drop zones.

Agree with your first point, Williade - the Patrols are made to be adapted and the aftermarket industry caters really well for Patrol (I'm not suggesting they don't for Prado, just that the cars are not as easy to option up, IMO).

I had a GU Patrol for 8 years before buying a 150 D4D Prado, and absolutely loved it. There weren't many places that the Patrol wouldn't go off the beaten track. But I have to say I have been blown away by comparison by the capabilities off road of the Prado. I don't have a lift on it which I think it really lacks, but in terms of stock standard ability it is hard to go past the Prado. No regrets from me!

I dont think the Prado is a soft roader at all........get the DVD's at then you will know that the Prado can do anything the bigger 4WD's can do and sometimes better.

I dont think TJM are pouring money into 4WDa via advertising or sponsorship so you are unlikely to see TJM staff or kit anymore

The cape DVDs are way back in issues 152 & 153. There hasn't been any for a while, it's all been Roo systems, GIC & Solar systems since.

8-o what are the harder tracks in VIC High country? I've been on some really awesome ones (billy goats, south basalt, blue rag, etc), but any Prado with a few upgraded bits could have tackled them. I'm not picking... just wanna make sure I drive the "harder" ones next time I'm there! ;-)

The prado is one tough truck and yes those trips were probably 10-15 issues back, I think u might find that Prado has been retired now, their is only so much punishment that one car can take from someone that doesn't know how to drive a 4wd.

the funny thing about the dvds that roothy is in .is you may notice that he tells people like honest don where roothy wants him to drive and how he should do it . so honest don and others are made to look like idiots when they get stuck while good old milo just trucks on through , ahhh shes' a good old girl . in the last dvd that don was in , it clearly looked to me like he had the shits with being made to look like an imbecile driving a new fandangled prado . as we all know a prado will never be as good as an ancient piece of sh.. that rattles itself apart and constantly breaks thereby needing aftermarket parts which may be supplied by a sponsor . ive stopped buying the dvds that feature roothy for these reasons . roothy has been doing stories like this for many years before he ventured into 4wding. i used to follow his exploits on his piece of junk harley davidson which broke down every time he went away for a weekend and had to be fixed on the side of the road, when he used to write for streetbike . very similar stories . roothy just loves old crap. i loved his announcement at the sydney 4x4 show that he was getting rid of the family 80 series and stepping into an fj40 troopy, hmmmm nothing like a backwards step .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

I don't know which DVD was the last one Don was in, but I saw issue 156 which had Don in the TJM 150, Glen in a 200 series and Steve from GIC had his debut trip in the Hilux towing a camper. Roothy parked Milo in an undignified fashion on it's side in that DVD.

The track on that DVD I was talking about was referred to as the "World War 1" track. They got about 1/4 the way up it and turned back, maybe you could prove a Prado could do what Milo couldn't.

I wonder how much the perception that a Prado is a soft 4WD has to do with the first ad campaign Toyota ran when the 90 series was released?

From memory it featured a Prado driving down a track and stopping for a Frilled Lizard in the middle of the road. Out popped a pile of women dressed in their best finery to move it out the way.

One of my mates used to give me a hard time about it every time he saw me after I bought my vehicle.
