  • So who broke something over the weekend?

I was up near Dargo, Vic, over the Easter weekend with a group of people restoring Blake Snake Creek Hut to its former glory. Whilst working on the hut we heard a car coming up the road with a loud “Clunk” coming repeatedly from it as it drove towards us. Loud enough that everyone stopped work to look at what was coming.

We then saw a 120 Prado drive past. The group thought it was at least a CV joint but most likely an axle that had gone. It would have been a long drive home for those in the vehicle.

So if that was you, help us out with the bets on what broke

I broke my flexible UHF antenna. So much for it being recommended to me by local communications installer. I said I wanted something that would survive in the bush. The Axis has a flexible rubber base with metal wire upper. Well, the corrugations finally killed it off. I should have known it wasn't going to last just by watching the amount of flexing mounted on the wings of the bullbar. Back to the 1.2m fibreglass aerial. At least these survive the corrugations unlike those lousy metal springy flexy things. I did manage to pick up a couple of nuggets to waive the cost though.

In the morning, my family and i where heading out to Nelson Bay. We packed the car, all set, ready to go. I turned on my 150 series Prado Kakadu, put the gear into DRIVE, handbrake down and i started driving, but when i pressed the accelerator, the car just kept revving. I revved it a bit more, then i heard a loud bang from underneath of my car and then it started to move. My son said it was really loud. I decided to turn off the car and try again. I then started the car, put it into DRIVE, handbrake down and then i tried to move the car but still it didn't move. I revved it a bit then i heard another loud bang from under the car. It started to move but. Till now its still working perfectly. Hopefully nothing broke. Can anyone help me figure out what its was?? My son suggested maybe it was the differential.

            Timmay5.7 - more details please!!!

SujitPrasad - Diff's are pretty simple units, they won't break in your driveway. Perhaps the auto gearbox?

One of the young guys in our group at Talbotville near Dargo broke his collarbone in three places on Good Friday, does that count? Goes to show the sense of owning a Prado and not a trail bike!

I agree with glen_ep, its more likely a transmission problem. Can you check the fluid level in the 150? It sounds like there's a delay with clutches and bands engaging, possibly due to low fluid level.

Also check the handbrake is not sticking on even though the handle is released. The pistons in the caliper could be sticking and once a bit of pressure is put on them (trying to move) they release quite suddenly.

Did you wash the car recently? Especially around the wheel area?

I also broke my UHF antenna whip. Hoping I can get it replaced as only the plastic thread inside has snapped

Actually, I did wash the car the previous afternoon as I was travelling to Nelson Bay the next morning. I did wash around the wheel area too.

Thanks Graeme, hope it was just a sticky brake as I had washed the car the pevious afternoon. I have not experienced anything similar since that morning which is now a week ago. I hope I have not broken anything.

Thanks Williade, I will check the fluid level tomorrow morning. I have been relying on the Toyota service guys to do that for me. I might check it myself to ensure it has been topped up.
