  • Gel battery info.

As per my other thread, regards the power draw on my fridge, I have found out, and had confirmed, that my fridge is not the issue, but it is the flooded wet cell deep cycle that I was expecting too much from.
So, I am on the hunt for a new battery to go not my OffRoad Downunder tray, which has max size of 310mm N70.
I have read up on the recommended Optima and Deka batteries, but no one has mentioned these
    http://www.apolloenergy.com.au/Renew...ts/12V/N70-GEL

Has anyone had any experience with these?

    Thanks in advance.

Mark, what is the optimum charging voltage and how do gel batteries cope with the sort of temps under the bonnet? Haven't heard of the brand but then hadn't heard of Ritar or Fullriver before I bought mine either. I have to top up my AGM with a smart 240V charger from time to time. 100Ah in a gel or AGM is a big improvement over a 70Ah wet cell.

      Hi Michael,

They quote heat and vibration resistant, designed for under bonnet, 2year warranty.
I was looking at the FullRivers too, Ritar is new to me.
      I have a 240v 2/6amp charger too, so I'll be covered.
iamquite surprised th number of people that sell batteries that do not know what an AGM battery is?

I was quite surprised over Easter, three days running the fridge and some LEDs in the camper ran the engine for about 30 mins, battery lit came on about 20 mins before we drove out. Weather was cooler, so that may have helped.

I think Ritar and Fullriver are the same animal. I bought Fullriver first time around and killed that (entirely my fault) and replaced it with the same and used the original Fullriver as a charging source for iPods and phones. Sat neatly in one of the Gerry can holders. Also ran a couple of LED lights around the camp. It wouldn't hold 12V but was ok to charge things and run LEDs. Last trip it died completely and we were so used to having an auxiliary auxiliary battery I went off and bought another. It was a Ritar and I reckon comes out of the same factory.

Thanks mate. I am stuck deciding between the Optima D34 (55Ah) or D27F (66Ah), but their Ah rating is lowish compared to the Haze N70Gel at 100Ah.

Can anyone help me with this...
My current 75Ah flooded wet cell, compared to the Optima D27F 66Ah compared to the Haze 100Ah. I understand, given the technology, the D27F will last longer than the wet cell, but how much longer???

          The D27F is $378.00
The N70Gel is $339.00 not that price is my deciding factor, I want to make sure I have as much battery charge as I can without having to run the car while camping.. on paper, 66Ah versus 100Ah (bearing in mind I know my 75Ah wet is cr@p)...

Ok, so here is a twist for those playing at home..

Last week, late Thursday afternoon, I was chasing an AGM or GEL battery as we were heading out camping and I now know, my current aux, does not cut the mustard...
So, rang a place I had dealt with before, for tyres and stuff, they do batteries, but they had no idea what I was after... They sold me a deep cycle battery, used, for $100, delivered... So, took it inside and plugged in the charger, FAULT... Try again, FAULT, change down to 2amps, try again, FAULT... Pissed off was I...

Anyways, rang them and took it back today, looking to get my money back, but ended up with a new MRV50 EXG calcium battery.

So, my question, and I know I've asked a few recently, is this.
Can I run this new battery as my main battery in my D4D, it has 80Ah and 650 cca. It is a dual purpose battery designed for under bonnet, cranking and deep cycle.

I still want to to get either the Optima D27F or Haze N70Gel as my aux. if i cannot run this as my main, I'll get an ABR battery box for it 80Ah battery.. Chuck it in he camper when I get one...

I have read stories on here about running differing kinds of batteries and cooking one.
Can I run an AGM and the standard battery or this newer Calcium battery together?

            Thanks.

            Mark.

So I ordered the Haze 100Ah yesterday. Battery world wanted $450 and two weeks delivery. Ordered online, from a store with outlets in multiple states, should be delivered today or Monday, $315.00 delivered.
Guaranteed under bonnet against vibration and heat, N70 size, so fits my tray nicely.
I have also had confirmation from Projecta that their Smart solenoid will not cook either battery given they are different styles, flooded wet cell and Gel.

              How good is that...

MDSIMPSON ...The calcium batt requires a higher charge voltage than normal lead acid so I wouldn't use it as your main batt . You could use it as an aux batt but you'd need a DC-DC charger to charge it properly as the ECU controlled alternator won't charge it properly .
                Cheers

Hi Ross. Yes, the new calcium battery will placed into an ABR-Sidewinder battery box for use when camping, to run all tho 'other' things. I will charge it with 240volt charger at home... It will not be put int the car. I'll keep my main battery as is, and the current aux may well be put into another battery box, until we purchase a camper, hopefully very soon...... I have my eye on one, just need ministerial approval...
