  • braking problem on a 96 Grande (has abs)

Gooday learnard friends and trusted experts

We have owned our 96 Prado since new.

A few mths back I fitted Bridgestone Desert D's to our beast (we have never had them on the Prado b4).
A week back I had to brake hard(at 30k) while doing a RH Turn and the tyres screeched and the truck fishtailed on me, not 3 days later I had a repeat at much slower speed(20K) this time cause by a person running in front of me whilst I was turing right, again the tyres screeched but the 'P' held the road well.
We have never had this happen b4, I checked tyre pressure (all 40 OK)
and could see no probs underneath, fluid levels right and no dash warning lights came on.
I then tested extreme hard braking on a country road, dead staight and all worked as normal, twice in a row.

ANY COMMENTS..... I know don't do it, right!

    turtle,
The fishtail effect you were getting may have been tread squirm as the Bribgestone tread is deeper than say the Dunlop's you probably have just removed. (tread depth is critical re-stability, the deeper the tread the more unstable)
Out of interest some years ago Dunlop made it quite clear that a particular tyre in their range must only be fitted as a set as you could have a stability problem if mixed!

As for the tyre screech, did the tyres actually lock or were they just protesting :?: (you did mention that the Prado brake normally in a straight line)

    My comments

      Thanks for your feedback folks.

For the last 6yrs Maitland Toyota have serviced the beast and I will be logging the issue with them at the next service due next mth.
However, with the last 2 services there have been issues with workmanship(new radiator hose not tightened right and another lesser fault on service) that may see us moving to Cessnock Toyota.

      Re the tyres
We had Dunlops on the from new, but moved to Scorpions prior to the DDs. The Scorpions were very noisy on the road and didnt track well the DD's Ive had on Patrols and were good but do have a big tread and I can see that as the problem as the Prado is a high set truck and the screeching was the tyres silding sideways over the road surface Im sure, I think it will be back to the Dunlops for us next time around.

      Many thanks for feedback guys

Sounds more a swerving/braking issue than tyres?

I have bridgestone 694's and never experienced this even when heavy braking/swerving to avoid roos.
