  • Waterproof jackets etc...

I was thinking about what I would like for my b'day... Gotta start planing early

What's everyones thoughts on brands etc...?
From what I've seen around the campfire and obviously the legend that is Driza-bone is that the best option?

Are the full length oilskins the best ones to get?
    Cheers, Leon

I prefer something made out of Goretex, lighter, easy to pack etc.

    An example http://www.mountaindesigns.com/onlin...x?prodID=19528

These are the ducks nuts http://www.macpac.com.au/shop/en_au/...esolution.html

I bought a Kathmandu Goretex jacket over 20 years ago and it still repels water like the day I bought it.

Kathmandu goretex on sale isn't a bad price. I've got one and it's great in that it lacks up so small but....

Being a country boy I love my oilskins. I'd recommend RMW jackets over drizabones, better quality, better fit, nicer products in general.

Thanks for the ideas... I might be able to get a good price on a mountaindesign one as I know who shoots the catalogues
I like the 'romance' of the oilskins so will look into the RMW ones as well.

Unbeknown to me RMW had the same deal on last year. Went in to buy a pair of Craftsman boots I'd been eyeing for awhile and got a free Dry skin jacket thrown in, normally retailing for $250. Happy camper!

I've had my Drizabone for 18yrs now, it's great. And also has smell when you get it out that reminds you of the bush

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

Found out to our horror that our Drizabones needed a little maintenance during heavy rain in Vic once, ended up "Frozenbones" as they leaked water along the stitiching.

Applied a waterproofing treatment to the fabric and no repeat since thankfully.

                  Cheers,

                  Dave

Goretex beats an oilskin hands down for practicality in IMHO. But understand why people love their oilskins, so really it's personal opinion.

Managed to get into the Royal show once in my younger years without having to flash the members badge simply cos the guard miss took me for an arena judge - all dressed up in the moleskin jeans, akubra and driza-bone full length coat... Nicely done!

But as for prefference - driza-bone oil skin - everytime!

I have always been too scared to wear goretex around a campfire with the inevitable sparks etc, I would assume it would just melt holes? My oilskin certainly doesn't have any issues though...

And there is just something about the smell of an oilskin...

                        Cheers

Well I'm sold... had a look at the RM Williams oilskin jackets today and they are very nice.
Retail is pretty reasonable too... $210 for the 3/4 and $235 for the full length.

Now, I think all I need is the 3/4 length but I can see time when the full length would be good.

                            Arrrrrrrggghhhh!!
