  • Ideas Needed for Cape Trip

Hey guys just looking for some ideas advice i am about 8 weeks away from going to the cape for 5 weeks and thought i had better organise my spare tyre's i currently have the good old std gx 225x70x17 bf goodrich all terrains on there i know they are an odd size but thought no problems should be able to get a couple from somewhere boy was i wrong there is not 1 in australia or america and not even looking at making them in the near future so i am know up shit creek as i dont have any spare tyres to take. So i hatch a plan just buy some second hand rims and new tyres only a lazy 2k or so boy did the missus hit the roof when i told her about my idea so looks like i may not be going up there this year unless i can come up with a cheaper soloution so where else do i turn to but the greatest forum i know for advice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i really dont want to miss out on going this year.

What if you get a new "cheaper" set of tyres to use for the trip, then put the BFG's on when you get back. You could get the Federal MT's or something...??? You should be able to get away with under $1500.

Bighorns are nice and cheap, but perform well above their price bracket.

Dusty, where in cairns is a good place for tyres, I have just moved back and have been away several years. I'm thinking bighorns cause they are cheap and aggressive...

If you only need a second spare why not go for a second hand tyre? I have done the Cape twice in Prados, both times towing trailers with the last trip 16000km and no tyre losses. My Prado has 17 x 265/70 BFG and my trailer has 16 x 265/75 BFG so at a pinch the triler spare also fits the Prado. You can get cheap rims such as the Sunraysia Track 2 in 16 inch which will do for a second spare. A far cheaper alternative. Carry a decent tyre plug kit and a compressor and you'll find this will fix most deflation problems.

Post a wanted thread on PP for that size tyre, someone is bound to have one or 2 they would part with, but may not read a cape york thread.

            Cheers Andrew

                Todd,
I got the Bighorns from the opposite Super Amart. Nothing special, just good customer service.

                Cheers,
                Dusty
