  • Tyres - Uni-directional and Bi-directional - how to tell??

    Hi to all,

This may be a silly question and probably is but I cant help noticing on some rig photos that the front tyres seem to have different tread patterns, but have since figured that the tyre is the same but on the wrong side of the vehicle. I haven't seen this mentioned as a thing to look out for, so beggars the question. Which is the right direction for the tyre and do the tyre fitters really give a toss when fitting tyres to your truck? I guess my question is how do you know your tyres have been fitted correctly to the appropriate side of your truck and are rotating in the direction that the manufacturer designed/intended them to be???

    Cheers Paul

There is an arrow indicating direction on directional tyres. all other tyres can be rotated as per usual.
Directional tyres are a pain in the arse IMO. They may suit some guys with shopping trolleys though but I wouldn't know about that.

Some of the newer AT's are unidirectional, and they can only be rotated front to back and vice versa, not sure of the performance as I haven't seen them on the tracks yet.

Yeah Richo, some manufacturers are also going with directional tyres for mud terrains too. I would never buy a tyre like that, especially with blocky MT tyres. Rotating the tyres properly is essential for maximum life, and I for one don't have spare cash to throw away.

I think they got their place, in sport suv`s but unidirectional for a real 4wd seems over the top.
What about asymetric tyres, is that what you have seen in the pictures?
They can be fitted anywhere, but may have big blocky shoulders to help cornering grip. Nothing wrong with those. Just need to makes sure the "outside" is "outside".

Just curious who makes unidirectional 4wd tyres?

ok real mud tyres, makes sense. Well if you buy those and run them on the road you will not be worrying about long tyre life
