  • Programming UHF Radio (25W -> 5W)

    Hey,

    I bought a second hand ICOM IC-400PRO UHF radio today (its in perfect working condition) from a commercial user who had it set to 25W. I was wondering if anyone knows of a store/person who can change the settings back to 5W? (As its 5W max for private use only (25W for Licensed Commercial Users))

    The unit came with the Cloning Cable. I tried plugging it into the PC and running some software (off the net) but no luck. It kept saying something about the COM Port?

    Thanks,

    Why not just leave it? All it means is you can transmit further.

    I promise you the radio police aren't going to come and arrest you.

    If you really want to though, go and see a radio shop, Electric Bug on Torrens Rd. should be able to help you out.

        It seems to be like the general consensus is to leave it. Cheers for the opinions guys.

            If its the radio i'm thinking of there is button on the head unit marked LOW to switch it between HI(25w), MED(15w) and LOW(5w) on the lcd display. It will show LOW, MED but HIGH will be blank on the display.

              If you want to re program it, Wayne Richards Auto at Murray Bridge will be able to reprogram it to your exact needs,
              I wouldnt be running 25 w all the time but you are able to set it up as a selectable power level 25/5/1 watt.
              The problem with running 25w is that you end up often frustrated because others can hear you but won't be able to reply. Also you often don't want the whole of Australia hearing you.

              I run select channels on 25 w eg 40 but use 1 w when talking in convoy so peeping toms can't track the conversation for very long.

              My radio was set up by Wayne, did great job and has also turned off the beep every time it turns on and off.

              he will also be able to upgrade it to the new 80 channels if you need! Just a short drive up the freeway. Give him a call 0885321411

                I think you will find cb channels will be limited to 5w output if set by defaults with the software. I'm pretty sure the software wont allow higher output within the 40ch cb bank. You can however set up addition channels in another bank with 25w if you so desire.
