Iridium vs Inmarsat... Which way to go?

I've got the IsatPhone Pro on the Inmarsat Network and have to say I'm pretty happy with it. I got a 50% discount through the Subsidy Scheme (net cost of $350 to me). I've never had issues with coverage, although I was warned that due to the satellite positioning (somewhere over PNG apparently) I may not get network coverage if I was in a deep valley with a north-facing cliff, thus blocking the direct line to the satellite. I have used it and periodically turned it on to check coverage in the Vic High Country, trying to emulate the scenario, but haven't yet failed to connect.

The one thing that swayed me to this phone (and network) was the flexible pre-pay option and long life of the credit. The only thing it doesn't have is the ability to use a standard GSM SIM, but I figured if there was no network coverage AND my Sat phone didn't work, the 3rd option was the 112 feature from any mobile, and after that I was stuffed anyway!

I can't comment on how it compares to other phones/sat networks out there, but can say that this one meets all my expectations and at $350 is a very cheap form of insurance if I ever NEED it.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers
    John

If you don't have reception from your own provider you can dial 112 and it will pick up signal from any providers tower that is in range and call emergency services (same as 000)

When I did my CPR refresher a couple of months back the instructor was telling everyone that 112 on a mobile would work anywhere because if it couldn't find a normal mobile signal it would use a satellite, but you might have to wait for the satellites to cover your area so keep trying. Sadly this wasn't the only thing she got totally wrong.

Have a look at this link: http://www.acma.gov.au/scripts/nc.dl...ARD/1001/pc=PC.. I have no idea if it works as I've never tried it.
