  • Second spare tyre for Simpson Desert trip

    Hi all,
I am looking at different ways to carry a second spare tyre (no rims) on my Simpson trip in July.
The roof tray is the obvious place, but I am looking at a roof-tent so tyre on roof is probably not possible.
I don't have rear bar carrier. Is it recommended to keep one tyre inside the car on the back seats (with appropriate tie-downs)?
    Thanks
    Andy

Wrap it in a tarp and strap it on the back seat or strap it on top of the tent and remove it each night before setting up.

Remove half the back seat and you will have all the space you need and it will help keeping your weight down low. I will be placing my second spare on the roof but I will have 4 people in the car.

Have a look at the Mount Dare web site on vehicle preparation. Roof racks are one of the biggest points of failure for people doing the crossing, so any weight that can be kept off is a good thing.

If it's only a tyre why not look at lashing it to the existing spare?.........surely it can't add too much weight to the bracket?

I have carried one (tyre and rim) between back of driver or passenger seat and rear seat. Just fits.

Err, I'm not sure that's a good idea.

Thanks everyone, looks like in the back seats it will be. I will be able to put up a roof-top-tent to stay away from the crawly creatures!

I always pack mine in the back of the car filled with little ods and ends, that way you dont loose alot of space etc.

I wouldn't do it all the time, but one of the vehicles on my recent Madigans trip strapped a second spare on in this fashion (Pajero), its not ideal but it would work. Having said that keeping weight off the back door is always a good idea given they are prone to sagging.

If you have space on the back seat then that would be fine, just strap it in and remember if you end up using that spare the one you need to put back in may be very dirty, muddy, torn to shreds depending on the reason for the change.

                  Cheers Andrew

Oops sorry, read too fast. Thought that it was a complete spare being strapped onto the spare on the door. My bad.

After doing the Simpson trip with the spare tyre inside the car, it was doable but took up a fair bit of room, and I had to stack a few things inside the car making things rather crowded and hard to get to. Next time the tyre will be outside for sure!

im pretty sure you could fit a spare on a roof rack? how big is rack and tent folded up? i thought you'd have enough room at front...

                        a arb kakadu tent is 1400mm wide x 1200mm long x 400mm high

and the touring steel rack is 1250mm x 1790mm

                        which leaves you 590mm.

                        http://www.arb.com.au/products/roof-...racks/3813200/

Tire may not sit flat but should still get it up there.

You could ratchet strap a tyre to the existing spAre.
Keep in mind, Even a Grandtrek tyre alone weighs 16kg
Some chunky tyres can be easily around 30kg
I would Try to keep it inside if possible, but don't think it will do too much too the rear door in the short term as it already probably weighs in about 100kg itself with all the crap hanging off it.

Twin wheel carrier is the most obvious answer so that's my 2cents worth.

I challenge you to find a tyre for a Prado that weigh close to that much! My 265/70/17 BFG with Toyota rim combined only weigh 31Kg, unless you have an arctic truck conversion I think 30kg is over the top.
