  • Hydrogen Cells - HHO gas

    Hi,
I saw some old discussions from 4 or 5 years ago on this topic, but wondered if anyone has actually installed one of the kits in a turbo-diesel. Despite the skepticism about the claims of huge increases in fuel economy (well-founded IMO), the US Dept Transport has issued a report saying that using the Browns Gas or HHO gas as some call it (really a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in the correct proportions to make water) as a supplementary fuel to diesel does have some benefits by improving the combustion efficiency of the normal diesel fuel, to give an overall gain of about 5% in fuel economy, as well as the engine running much cleaner.
    Any thoughts?

Sounds similar to gas injection in turbo diesels. Dad ran this on a 2004 Hilux with great success. Is this the system that you simply add water and it splits it into hydrogen and oxygen before injecting it into the system?

BTW welcome to Pradopoint, I hope you enjoy your stay!

I don't think it is quite that easy. A hydrogen fuel cell uses hydrogen gas which would need an engineered tank and is expensive to buy. It is quite energy expensive to produce hydrogen from the water in the first place. You could always move to California, I think Arnie bought it in over there.

I should have remembered that the electrolysis process uses a heap of energy, a lot more than what could be efficiently produced by a 12v car circuit.

Hi Reidy, thanks for the welcome.
This is the type that generates the hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis - it definitely does not store the gas.
Agreed that it takes far too much electric power to generate significant volumes of gas. This only generates a small amount - just enough to improve the combustion efficiency of the normal diesel fuel so you get a clean burn and use more of the energy in the fuel instead of generating soot. So in that regard its more like supplementing the diesel with LPG like your dad used to do on his Hilux, only without the hassle of having a big cylinder of gas taking up heaps of room and waiting to blow up.
Did anyone see the pics of the 100 series cruiser where the tank blew up under the passenger seat? I would rather not have that happen to me!
                Cheers

No more likely to blow up than a Petrol tank.

Yes. And as far as I can ascertain, we know know none of the specifics. I think people might be a bit hasty in assuming that LPG tanks are ticking time bombs.
