Diesel Fuel Additive

G'day fellas
Just want to ask a quick question about fuel additive to my 2010 Prado Kakadu Diesel. I'm travelling to Bathurst, Dubbo & Forbes during the school holidays comming up in 2 weeks with the family. I have noticed that the temperature in that part of the world dips below zero deg C at night during this time of the year. Will I need any additive to the diesel to cater for the sub zero temperatures. Also will I be ok to start the car in the morning without taking any precautions or will I need to do any checks before hitting the start switch. Your advise(s) most appreciated.

That is a good question Sujit.

Alpine diesel is sold at the approaches to the high country (Canberra, Myrtleford, Wangaratta etc.) to cater for those heading to the snow where cold temperatures can 'gel' diesel in the fuel lines at around -10 degrees. It was quite funny working with a mate at Mt. Hotham watching people trying to warm their engine bays up. On more than one occasion we had to stop people from lighting fires under their cars!

Having never seen it available anywhere else this time of year, I would suggest that you don't need any additives. I am too interested to see what some of the more experienced here will say about this too, seeing as I live in Canberra and it's a very, very cold place when it wants to be.

Out of interest, I usually heat the glow plugs twice on cold mornings, but that might be a bit difficult for electronic push start set-ups.

When it's really cold, the electric start heats them for longer automatically.

Id be surprised if you need it at those temps. I normally only get alpine diesel when Im expecting -3 and lower over night. i.e snow camping.
certainly had it at 0 over night plenty of times with no issue on standard fuel.

Minus 9 here in the last 2 nights started 4 different diesel engines first thing both mornings with no problems, so Sujit you hopefully want have a problem. enjoy your trip.

Which fuel additive do you use?

I use to think that fuel additives were snake oil for modern cars, but a few years ago (a few to many for me to remember) I was introduced to Pro-Ma MBL8 oil additive and on a number of occasions I have seen what a great product this is for both new and old engines. My wife has a SAAB 95 that started using a lot of oil and blowing smoke. The SAAB dealer said the turbo was stuffed and would cost $5k to fix. I used MBL8 and now it does not use enough oil to count and SAAB are unable to explain why it does not need fixing any more. (no cash for comments – just my experience)

With this thread I started using Pro-Ma DT5 diesel treatment again. I purchased a bottle last year prior to a trip staying above the snow line in the high country as this product is also a “cold flow improver” but I had stopped using it (just being lazy).

So just wondering what the majority of people are using and if they are using anything at all? Are there other experiences out there with using products like these, good or bad?

This was my very small concern a few weeks ago, QBW high country trip, as it turns out none of us had any issues.
We wernt at snow hights much but the night we stayed at upper Jaimeson hut the Prado said it was 0 till about 10am (not sure if they go below????) there was ice all over everything including tents frozen stiff, i also noticed 10-15 mm thick broken ice on all the puddles on top of a ridge we were travelling that morning, i think it was cold hahaha.......
I would use alpine diesel if i was parking at snow, like a ski resort for days.......

After reading a number of threads where Algae has been linked to injector issues I'm going to fit a diesel pre filter to my vehicle and contemplating using this product when I fill up the tank as an added measure.


I only use Caltex Vortex Premium Diesel.

Hi there Fabes, chemtech was always used in my hilux up until 2 thousand k under 300 thou (when I sold it) and my diesel pump was not touched in my old 2.8D hilux (dead set truth was not touched in regards to a rebuild,seals etc) I then continued to use it in my 1kz in my prado which I sold with just over 100 thou so cant really say if it did any good on the prado. I think its well worth it especially these days with the price of some of these high tec diesel pumps in the newer vehicles and the price of some of the injectors as well...........Cheers Steve

Toyota sell one them selves for the diesel engine I have bought it myself when I ran out of chemtec one day. Its available over the counter to anyone and also suits the D4D engine. I gave the bottle to my neighbour when I sold my prado. Will see if he still has it or has ran out, if he still has it I will take a pic of it and post on here unless some one else is using it ??? Its a cleaner, anti fouling/ algae etc..........Cheers Steve

like alot of us at the moment I've been knocked down with the flu so sorry I haven't got back to you matt which who recommended the chemtech deisel power.My prado usually sits for a week and only used on week ends so on saturday morning after start up and driving for the first 15 to 20 min it was a little ratally it would only do this after sitting for a week not if using daily.Matt was saying it could be an issue with condensation(hope i said that right).Anyway after treating the D4D with the chemtech I don't have that issue any more.Thanku for the info I have now converted to chemtech deisel power to.
