• What cars have you owned?

The cracked guards thread got me thinking about my previous cars and how things have changed. I've always held onto my cars for a long time and I used to enjoy working on them. With my last few cars its got to the point where a lot of the stuff requires specialized tools and diagnostic gear so I don't really work on my cars much anymore.

Early on I was much more into motorbikes and I went through quite a few, but this is about cars. Anyway back to the topic, below is a list of some of the ones I remember. Thank god there isn't a 120Y in the list.

HQ Panel Van - my first V8 and a lemon
Renault 160TS - the seats folded into a double bed
Mazda RX2 - heaps of fun rocket and unbreakable, contrary to what I was told.
Cortina MkII GT - also heaps of fun
HQ Holden - bullet proof, handled like shit
Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter - learned how to drop and replace the engine in 60mins
HZ Statesman SL/E - hoon mobile, gotta love an old V8
Gemini - wife's car
Volkswagen Kombi Camper - (with wood panels) fun but in a different way
VN Commodore - dull and boring
Audi 100 - wife's car, 5 cylinders, what was I thinking?
VX Commodore - put me off Holden for life
Subaru Liberty - amazing where this thing would go
Honda Accord Euro - wife's car, dull but relaible
Toyota Prado 150 Series - First new car and love it so far

Favourite - Mazda RX2, unbreakable, went like a rocket and just plain fun to drive especially after I removed the rev limiter (redline around 8000rpm!) and fitted a 4 barrel carby to the rotary. Living in the country did some serious bush bashing in this car, boy was it fun going sideways down dirt tracks.

Thought I'd add in the bikes;
Yamaha DT 175 - learnt about falling off on this
RD250LC - whoo..hoo and then write-off
RD350LC - write-off by a mate
RZ350 - crazy fast for its time, write-off
XJ900 - write-off, that one really hurt
FJ100 - great bike until I hit the back of a roo
FJ1200 - sold when kids cam on the scene

Here's my car portfolio:

1994 Toyota Corolla AE102X - economical, reliable and still going
1997 Toyota Prado VZJ95R - fun both on an off road but thirsty
1997 Toyota Landcruiser FZJ80R - fun on and off road but thirsty and huge turning circle (I recon it has half the steering lock of the Prado) I will hopefully turn it into my dream rock crawler/comp truck
Declan: 1997 GXL 4.5 Auto 80 series on LPG, ARB bullbar, 2" OME lift, 32" MTZ, GME UHF, rear ARB locker, Kaymar spare wheel carrier
PLANNED: 3 or 4" suspension lift, 2" body lift (maybe), winch, 35" MTZ + roadies, front locker, sliders, cylinder head rebuilt for LPG, Garret Turbocharger

Volvo Sedan - can't remember the model (700 series I think), it didn't cost very much and didn't last very long
Ford Telstar - cost all of $1600, got me around
1985 Toyota Landcruiser HJ60 normally aspirated diesel - cost $5400 - solid off roader but no power (struggled to get past 80 on any kind of hill) and started to become a bit unreliable and I decided it was more trouble to fix than I had time to deal with particularly with a new kid on the way
2009 Toyota Prado 150 D4D - cost too bloody much - very comfortable, has been very dependable so far off road with the only significant mod being a change of tyres, and the split climate control is fantastic but some times miss the space of the 60

She's never driven it and never will. Might as well ask her to drive a road train. She even damaged two previous cars of mine when they were still new.

Wouldn't necessarily agree on the step back - I love Porsche's but the Boxster is a hair dresser's car (though one of my mates has the same to say about the Prado).

My wife has had the same car, a 1998 Ford Festiva GXL Daemon, so long as we've been married (bought in 2004) and prior to that had a Daihatsu Charade preceded by a Mitsubishi Magna before she wrote it off.

1994 HJ75
2000 lancer evo tme
1992 535iS
1986 Corolla (ae86 built to race specifications)
1977 Corolla (KE55: broke the exhaust off at the manifold on the way home from buying it)
2005 Magna (awd s/c)
2011 Prado (gxl)

That's in some sort of order... But they all overlap, I still have all my old landcruisers, and the hilux and magna were only sold last year. The rest are all gone though.

I'm sure there were more too... I'll add them if I remember any.

Speaking of Camiras, I was caught out with a flat battery on my Centura so the young NRMA guy turns up and says it’s not charging properly and needs fixed. I told him I’ll be picking up a new Camera in two days. He then goes on about them being a Holden and a heap of sh1t. As I was getting one of the first ones I new he didn’t know what he was talking about. So I picked up the Camira and it breaks down on the way from the showroom. They tell me to ring the NRMA and tow it back. Guess who turns up and is falling all over the place pissing himself. Still that was theonly time it gave me strife.

The NRMA gave the missus a good grilling for about an hour after the Magna.
