I obviously hang onto my cars longer than most. It's 25 years since I got my first car, yet my list is only 5 cars long, as follows:

'66 Mazda 1500SS - yes the SS part was important, it had twin carbs, extractors, 4 on the floor, disc brakes, carpets, bucket seats, radio & heater all ex-factory - not bad for a '66 model. The 1500 engine died soon after I got it, so I replaced it with a more modern 1.8L which made it a very quick car. Unfortunately, using such an old car as a daily drive meant that eventually things started falling apart and it was just impossible to get parts for. I had neither the time nor the money at the time to give it the attention it needed, so sold it to someone who intended to do it up. Sadly a couple of years later he sold it to a scrapper. Now that I am in a situation where I could restore it, I regret getting rid of it, because it was a fantastic car.

'81 Mazda 626 - in baby-poo brown. I bought it cheap second hand, but someone at one point went into a dealer and said "I want one of those new 626's. I've been looking at your colours... I think I'll get it in baby-poo brown". The mind truly boggles.

'91 VN Commodore - This was a good find - a manual with low kilometres that hadn't been thrashed was a rarity. Being a series 2 it didn't have the issues that the early VN's had. It was an extremely good car, with an absolutely bulletproof driveline. On the highway, it was amazingly good on fuel - it could comfortably do Toowoomba to Sydney on a single tank of fuel.

'97 VSII Calais - When my wife eventually decided to get her licence, she insisted that she get an auto-only licence because she didn't have enough confidence in her ability to drive and change gears at the same time, so very reluctantly the VN was traded in on the Calais. It now serves as her car.

'06 Hyosung Scooter - ok, this doesn't really fit in this list as it isn't a car, but it is pivotal to us getting a Prado. With my wife's new-found freedom, and skyrocketing fuel prices I decided to buy a scooter as a cheap way of commuting. That was fine when we had perpetual drought, but when we started getting back to having wet seasons, the scooter proved to be utterly impractical. At the moment it is sitting in the backyard unregistered, basically because I couldn't be bothered getting off my butt to try and sell it. Anyone want to buy a scooter?

'03 Prado 120 GXL - When wet seasons started coming back to normal in 2009/10, the scooter proved itself to be pointless, going for weeks on end without being able to be used. With kids now at school, we needed a second vehicle, and it was proving to be painful trying to manage with just the one car. So one Saturday I decided to head out to car-yards with the intention of picking up a cheap ute as a second car. The idea being the ute would be handy if we needed to carry bulky items, take a trip to the dump etc. I looked at a few, and decided to buy a Navara twin-cab for $3000. Before I committed, I went home to pick up the missus to show her. I had a mate at the local Holden dealer who had previously told me they didn't bother with any of the cheap stuff, but because they were having a big sale that Saturday they might get a cheap ute as a trade-in, so I dropped in to see if they had any on my way to get the Navara. They hadn't, but while I was talking to him, a salesman had cornered the missus, and pretty much had her sold on a Captiva because of the 7 seats - we were planning on adding kid #4 fairly soon, so the 7 seater would be a plus. We both liked it, but I figured it was out of our price-range, so asked if they had any second-hand ones. The answer was no, but they did have a Prado that had 7 seats. She Who Must Be Obeyed fell in love, and I must confess I liked the idea too. Before we knew it, we had a shiny white beast parked in the driveway!

Now that kid #4 is in the factory, we will soon be looking for something with 6+ seats to replace the Calais. Looking at what's around under $10k, I have to admit my first preference now is a 90 series Prado, so there is a chance we'll become a 2 Prado family in the next few months.
        2003 GXL 4L V6. Sovereign bullbar, Prorack P-Bar roof-rack with basket, Oricom UHF-280, Uniden AT-870 antenna, SCA 100W spotlights.

Haven't gone through too many cars even though I've been driving for 24 years.

Started off with a 68 Kingswood. Primitive but reliable and SO cheap and easy to fix if things went wrong.
Then an 85 VK Calais. Modded the suspension and brakes so it practically handled like a racecar. Loved it.
Then a 2000 VT Commodore. My first new car.
Then my first 4wd. A 2005 Jeep Cherokee. Also bought new but was an unreliable pice of crap. I pity whoever ended up with it.
Then my current ride, an 03 Prado. Still going strong...
