  • iPhone vs Android

    Guys,

trying to get some real life experience tips on the two.
I don't want to start a Holden v Ford debate but more of an informed thread about the pros and cons of both phones.
I've had an iPhone since 2008 (3G & 4) and only once swayed away when I got a heap of crap blackberry which lasted 5 months before it ended up through a brick wall.

I'm now looking at getting the Samsung Galaxy SIII but having been an iPhone weilder for the past 4 years I'm unsure of it's performance and how it stacks up against the iPhone.

Has anyone here got one? Or, has anyone gone from an iPhone to an Android or vice versa and can provide some constructive criticism of either?

    cheers,
    Loz

I've gone from iPhone 3, to galaxy s2, to iPhone 4s. And my girlfriend has the new galaxy s3.
I like my s2 better than iPhone 4s but the battery life was terrible.
Galaxy s3 does some cool stuff and seems to have a bit better battery life (still only about a day if used a lot).
It's not a real comparison at the moment, this s3 should be compared to the iPhone 5 which will be released in the coming months, so no one can really answer that yet.
iPhone's are a bit more basic than androids, but this makes them a lot easier to use.
If you like simplicity, go the iPhone 4s, or wait for the 5 if you can.
But if you like gadgets, get the galaxy s3.
      That's my opinion,
      Cheers, Josh

I have an android phone, htc desire. I like it because you can use adobe and it has flash capability, however the things that tick me off about it is variety of apps available is much less than apple and u really need some IT experience to get the most out of it. I have used friends iPhones and they are much more user friendly. My contract runs out soon and I will be switching camps to an iPhone.
        Cheers Matt

I too have a HTC Desire HD. It is a very user-friendly phone. I agree with Matt's point above. However, I do have reception problems with Vodafone in Canberra of all places (part phone/part network problem) and after complaining on the weekend have managed to snavel a new Samsung S3 for free to help with reception, as it has the 850Mhz band (don't quote me), like the iPhone.

Given the option for an iphone i would have taken one though. I have a Macbook Pro and they would work seamlessly together. Also, I like the simplicity of use and the availability of apps. If you choose Android the new software update is coming very shortly.

I totally agree with Josh in regards to usability however my brother works in the phone business and can't stop raving on about how good the Samsung is, that being said he hates the iPhone so his thoughts may be clouded. I personally love the iPhone and will be upgrading to the 5 when it comes out, that is why Samsung are promoting so hard now to try and convert people over as they know an equal or possibly better product will be out soon. I believe they are talking November/December this year.

Recently got the samsung s3. Awesome screen, big and bright enough to use as dedicated GPS, great battery life with replaceable battery and can use add on memory card.

Very happy with it. Travelling today with friend with iphone, similar use during the day tonight his battery 20% mine 68%.

So the ice cream sandwich platform is common to HTC and the Samsung smart phones ? Same op system, just different phones ?

Guys thanks for the advice. Maybe a little more about my use may help!

I have a Macbook pro too and am obsessed by gadgets and integration etc. My main uses are for e-mail and phone.
Love my apps too but they're limited to banking, footy scores and weather/snow forecast apps.
Don't use one for gaming at all and use it for youtube occasionally.
I also use alot of PDF and excel and the poor iPhone excel features shit me (would it hurt to add a search function people??)

That being said, integration with my music, photos and calendar is paramount. If I can't properly integrate it with iTunes then it's a deal breaker. I wish I had one to try out for a few days

Also a big fan of the mapping apps. I'd be dead without google maps.
Apps in general don't trouble me as I've already had a look and everything I need is offered by Android.
I like the idea of a big screen as I find the iphone's a bit cramped!

Keep the opinions coming, great reading.

PS: I'm quite good at working out tech and stuff, so if the phone is a little harder to work out at first, but more functional in the long run, then it's not going to scare me away!

I think I may wait til the iPhone 5 comes out, then head down to the store and put them side by side and work it out then.
I'm still enslaved by my contract for another 45 days, 0 hours, 42 minutes and 36 seconds (yes I have se up a countdown timer on my mac)

ive said this before . if you can't work out how to use your i phone go to the pub or the corner store and there will be half a dozen people who will happily tell you how to work it . try doing that with an android phone , you'll get a really blank look , or a what the hell .

Android is becoming much better and easier. My wife is the least technical person that I know and she has no problems with the latest Samsung S3... I'm shocked that there would be less technically savy people on PP
