  • D4D: Do you void your warranty if...

...you do the oil/filter changes yourself at the 5,000km service intervals instead of getting it done at the dealers?

I intend to have the 10,000km service intervals at the dealership.

    Hi SSbaby

The belie veD4D only needs to be serviced every 10000km.If you do it yourself every 5000km as long as you use genuine oils and filters,Toyota would be none the wiser.

      Hey Rob.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was advised by a dealer to change the oil/filter every 5K for the D4D even though the recommended service intervals are 10,000kms.

I assumed most members here changed their oil every 5000kms even for the D4D... much like the older diesel?

I had an interesting conversation with my toyo dealer the other day when I asked him about installing a power module. He said that nothing automatically voids a warranty, it is what happens if something goes wrong. If it can be said/proven that it was something that you had done or fitted as against the manufacturer or their work, then the warranty is at issue. When I bought my Prado, the principal said that it was fine in the city to go 10,000 kms between services. I followed this until recently and asked again. The service dept advised 5,000 kms. They can change their mind. Fickled lot at Toyota.

The service dept know how to look after their pockets. The mandatory replacement of the timing belt is 150,000km but most service centres advise to do so at 100-120,000km. Injector cleaning is another service, usually recommended way too soon... they work hard to earn that extra dollar.

I wish the service depts would stick to servicing vehicles in accordance with intervals described in the service manuals. There has to be good reason why Toyota go to the trouble to prepare service manuals where the owner is advised of things to check/replace for normally driven vehicles as well as for vehicles exposed to harsher environments.

A question for the many D4D owners out there.... do you change your oil every 5,000kms? :?:

i dont have a d4d but every car/4wd ive had since i got my licence ive always religously changed the oil at 5 thou, i know it adds to service cost but you have the add security of knowing everything is ok on the lube side, mine you ive never had a car brand new, they make to many good 2nd hand ones, but thats my personal opinion
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

We will be changing the oil every 5000km, and servicing every 10000km.

Andrew just did an oil change at work (the Pilbara) yesterday on one of the new Prado's, and said it was pretty thick, black and awful looking after 5000km. City environment may be different, I'm not sure.

The idea behind 5000km services is that with a diesel any contminants that enter the oil such as un-burnt fuel especially when cold aren't able to be burnt off again when they're hot due to the low volatility.
In a petrol engine a lot of short runs will still 'dirty' the oil but one good long run will still clean it to an extent due to petrol being much more flammable.
Usually stop-start running needs more maintenance because of less time at running temperature, one reason taxis and long distance trucks last so long.
And with the recommendations from dealers, no I'm not one but, it's a fact of life a lot of people are paid on a bonus system and the more extra's they generate the more their pay packet. You cant really generalise Toyota and say they can't make up their mind. 10,000 is recommended but no one would argue that 5 isn't better.
Personnally, every 5 for me, no matter what and just do what I can to look after it.

All this is only my opinion which at times meens nothing!!

SSbaby, after owning a few diesels I'm in the habit of the 5k oil changes and have kept it up with the D4D. As for doing it yourself, have you compared the cost? I always did it myself but now that I am leasing I have it done by Toyota. The cost at Toyota (around $100) is comparable to what I used to pay by the time I bought oil and a filter for my old pajero. Probably cost around $70 and I still had to get dirty myself. For the peace of mind and for the stamp in your log book, you might find it worthwhile taking it to Toyota rather than doing it yourself. Just my thoughts.

With my old 3.0 ltr Diesel Hilux i was doing the services at 10000km using full synthetic oil and with over 200000km with no problems with the motor. I would say that you are wasting your money and destroying the environment doing 5000km services in the modern diesel engines.

I cant argue with the environment bit. I ride to work partly just to do my little bit. The only thing I will say is that no matter what oil you use contaminents are a large part of the reason for a change. They get in there no matter what oil you use. Why do you think oil changes colour as it gets old or straight away on our lovely oil burners!

I'm still waiting for my D4D (hopefully December), but I also have a Peugeot diesel. I'm not sure if its just the third generation common rail diesel or that they use fully synthetic oil (or both), but they recommend that the oil get changed at every service which is every 20,000 (once a year). They do offer at free service (yes completely free) every 10,000 to change oil/filters and do a quick safety inspection, if you would like.

I guess these newer engines are much cleaner than the old ones. The Peugeots, and most European cars, are also happy to run off a B30 biodiesel which also supposedly helps with keeping the engine clean.

My experience with bio-fuels is zero but I know lpg powered engines definitely contaminate their oil a lot less.
                            Two things to add-
1- manufacturers are starting to have to be responsible for the environment long after the car is sold, as in going back to cartridge filters and changing the oils and other service items less because each car has less of an impact on the environment.
2- Fleet buyers want vehicles that require less servicing from new till 100,000kms. The less this time costs them the better. A classic example is v6 vx's needed oil every 10 and vy's went to 15k services. The only mod to the whole engine was 1 extra litre of oil.
What I'm trying to say is manufacturer's dont really need their cars to do 400k because the bulk of buyers (fleet) dont really care. How many people on here that bought their car new are going to see 300k on the clock? Not many.

Again, apart from the environmental bit, all this is just personnal opinion.

IMO I think it all depends on how long you are planning on keeping your car. If you're looking to run it into the ground and keep it for years then yeah, change the oil every 5k if you think it's necessary.

If you're only going to keep it a few years and not clock up 300,000kms then I wouldn't be too fussed, it'll probably be out of your hands long gone before something goes wrong with it.

Really is there any proof that changing oil every 5k prolongs engine life when service requirements state 10k? I've always serviced my cars as per service requirements and never had any problems whatsoever. I had a VP commode that I thrashed the bags out of for well over 230,000kms and it still ran like a dream, it didn't use a drop of oil.

If you add up the amount of extra money you're going to spend changing your filter and oil evey 5k for the time you keep your car, you could probably afford to get it fixed with the money you've saved IF anything does go wrong.

I guess at the end of the day if you think it's worthwhile doing and can afford to do it then why not.
