  • Travelling with Portable toilets, porta potty etc...

Now, I haven't shown my wife Trish's 'Notes and Tips for Participants' to the 2012 GTG but I know the first request will be...

I want a toilet in the camper trailer

So, my question is 2 fold...
    1. What brands do people use... good or bad?
    2. How do people secure them in the CT so they don't leak or get damaged with the type of terrain we tend to cover... ie, not the smooth black stuff that is so clearly a waste of tax payers money
    Cheers, Leon

I will have to check what brand ours is. (I will let you know Leon)

I would NOT, NEVER, NO WAY IN HELL, travel without the throne being emptied 1st. You do not have to mix up a full batch of chemicals as the toilet holds 15 Lts. That normally lasts 2 adults & 2 kids with a few extras dropping in for about 2 full days.
There are 2 types of chemicals one is blue for sewerage toilets only and the green one (thats the type you want ) as it's
biodegradable. You just dig a hole, empty the container and fill it in.

    Cheers
    Lawrie

Rev did you have to start talking about beer. I'm at work (dry ship) so we don't mention that sort of stuff at least for 3 more weeks. Then..........well my friend we make up for lost time.

I think ours is a T ford. I almost always travel without worrying about emptying it, pardon the pun but its a crap job and the fewer times I do it the better. We have never had an issue with it spilling.

The GTG info regards toilets however is mostly about the day trips, so you wont have your camper trailer with you except for the 2 days in Ngarkat. Lots of bush toilets (bushes) on all the tracks though!

                  Cheers Andrew

Yep we've got a Thetford toilet. No problems with leaks over rough terrain (and we've been over some pretty rough stuff). It travels in the camper. Actually it does sometimes leak out the breather in the cap on the flush tank if we fill it up too much. That is flush water only! So it is clean and NOT the smelly stuff!
A bit of gaffa tape over the breather when in transit should fix it.
The waste tank is completely sealed when not using it.

Same as Whitey1. I just put ours in a plastice cube crate just in case of spills.

Hi Leon, ours is a Thetford, and while the bottom tank is sealed, just the thought of a spill from it, dictates that I empty it.

I would not like the job of cleaning out the camper & items therein.

Cool, thanks... we've been planning on getting one for a while, and as Lorelai is still toilet training it'll be easier than trying to get her to understand the concept of peeing behind a tree when we've been telling her the best place is in the toilet for the last few months

I was thinking of a milk crate or something similar to help tie it down when on the move.
                          Cheers, Leon

We have the OzTrail version. The bottom tank has never leaked, but the top tank leaks all the time from the flushing squirter pipes so before travel I will dump the bottom tank and pour the remaining flush tank water into the bottom tank to save water. The missus puts some consentrated lavender smelly drops into the flush tank to "make it smell real purdy". Be mindful when disposing of the waste to ensure you dig a reasonable hole to prevent the wild dogs and dingoes from digging up your do-dos. We can usually find an old mineshaft which seem to be convenient for rubbish disposal.

Why not use the multitude of dump sites scattered all over the country instead of a hole, especially when using the nasty chemical mix?
