  • What spare parts to take on trip for 120 D4D auto

The 120 has only 46 000km and we are about to do a trip through the Simpson and central Australia. Just wondering if there are any parts that PP members consider to be vulnerable or common failure points and thus need to take as spares? There is all the obvious stuff like tools and tape and tyre kits and stuff but what parts to people take if going a bit remote?

Take a spare engine unless you can be assured that the injectors are properly within specification and are not faulty as is the case with nearly every D4D 2006 - 2009 like mine. If you don't have room for a spare engine then take a mate with a reliable vehicle (non D4D) and a good tow rope.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.

Thanks, perhaps I could organise an engine stand attachment for the roof rack? I take it from all the replies then that excluding injectors the D4D 120 is bullet proof!

I carry spare fuel filters, and air filter. It's a bit of a balance between weight and spares after that for me.

Fuel Filters, Air Filters, Serpentine Belt, Wheel Studs, Tyre plug repair kit.

If your D4D goes all clacky, it will use a lot of fuel. Best to do the simpson with at least one mate regardless of D4D or not.

Do up the suspension (lift it) and put LT rated tyres on and you're good to go.

A spare engine is too heavy for the roof rack

could you imagine telling the wife!

Hey babe the Prado Point guys say we need to take a spare motor so we can cross the Simmo there pretty cheap at about $10 to $15k, also the roof rack to put your clothes on because they wont fit in the back with the spare engine is about $800.
