  • Rattlle in diesel engine

    hello Guys,

I am a newbie so please be patient. I have just purchased my very first Prado. She is a late 2007 GXL auto, white, with the d4d 1KD motor.

I am now the lucky 2nd owner and the vehicle has just passed 120 000 clicks.

    Now to the point.

    1) engine rattling pretty dam loud when cold for a few seconds but my excellent local mechanic changed oil to penrite and now the engine is so much quiter, especially when cold, next to no knocking sound on initial acceleration now.

    2) engine noticebly louder when warmed up,especially on a warmer day. Sounds like a normal commonrail diesel to my ears however there is a knocking sound that can fade in and out depending on factors just mentioned.

Now I am acutely aware that this year and engine had alot of injector related issues and after searching your web i see its a very well known thing and I can also see that the new model injectors fixed this for people.

I have an injector specialist looking at it tomorrow who will come over to my good local mechanic to give his analysis.

Any other advice or experience would be greatly appreciated from the good people of prado point and I look forward to your response.

    Thanks John,

    Yes, noticed your thread earlier.
Whats the FTV bit, all I know is my engine number starts in 1KD then engine number, i am learning here so just curious.

I see Denso injectors now on ebay etc for around $350 bucks each, I understand they are the exact injectors just without the toyota box packaging. How much labour is involved in a standard install. My mechanic always does a great job and very competitely priced but a ballpark number would be great.

    Thanks again, so helpful. rob

          Heh The Roo,

Just spoke with my mechanic who has very good sources. Stated there are a few options here
          a) Install brand new injectors of same spec which saves having to program to ECU and cheaper and will fix the problem

          b) Install brand new injectors (new model type) but will require an expert with ability to program to ECU such as Clinton in Rocklea, Brisbane and will undoubtably cost alot more for that procedure.

What are the cost of a and b keeping in mind large drop in injectors prices now on ebay etc

Unless there is a real reason for the later I naturally lean towards option (a) however I am open minded and would appreciate experienced minds on this one.

          Thanks crew,Rob

Buy on Ebay and be aware you get what you pay for no backup or guarantees want to do that on a $50 k car?

Support a reputable local business person that you can trust. Justus opinion.

Sounds logical Richo, I dont see myself purchasing the injectors on ebay but another subscriber on this forum has and found them to be the real deal, just saying, they are dropping in price lately.

Like you suggested, I will leave it to my most excellent local guy who can order the parts in. The biggest (That sucks) is that he cannot do anything with the reflash of the ecu which makes me think I may have to go to clinton and walter at rocklea diesel in south brisbane.

Anyone know of a gold coast based co that can do the same thing, Rocklea is fair way up the road from the GC.
