  • SpaceCase on an ARB rack?

    Hi,
I am looking to better organise some storage on my ARB roofrack. I have found a SpaceCase modular that looks to fit perfectly at 1100x550x450 . Has anyone used the spacecase and thoughts? In particular they are very rectangular and just wonder how much extra wind noise they create. Choice is between one either 310mm or 450mm high
    Cheers

The bigger it is, the heavier it is going to be. And once loaded up, it is going to be pretty heavy trying to get it up on the roof. Also if it is higher, it will be harder to access stuff inside the box without climbing up onto the roof rack.

In terms of noise, probably not much difference, but the bigger the frontal area, the less aerodynamic it is going to be.

I bought the 1240x280x400 2nd hand (http://www.trimcast.com.au/general/12428040.htm) to fit alongside my kayak on the roof. Standing on the rear tyre, I can't see the bottom of the box, but I can still reach in to grab the paddles out. I have to haul the box up onto the roof without my tools in it. Then load the tools once on the roof. Same for unloading. Not much effect on fuel economy due to the long thin shape of it.

      I have the 1100x550x220

It's great, you might be surprised how much you can actually fit in it. It sits nice and low. But I certainly tossed up with the larger sizes.

Gumboot, Looking at space case to put up on the platform rack. How has yours been performing and now that you had it for a while would you stay with the same size or change?

Anyone else's thoughts appreached as well.

              Harry,
Yes, it has been great. That size fits in our ARB rack perfectly.
We put all the bulky sleeping gear and clothes in there to guarantee it stays dry and dust free when we go away.
I just then run a rachet strap over it and it doesn't move. I do not hear any additional noise as I already have the wind noise on the ARB rack and kids in the back....

The thing to remember is as pointed out above, they are heavy loaded. Don't load them up fully and try to lift them up.
(You can get an even taller one for more stuff if you wish. but it would be even heaver..)
I put it up there empty and then load from the back step of the prado with the door open. works fine for me , and if you put it so the hinge is facing away, you can open and get into it without taking it down.

Below is ours in action with the rack fully loaded...

              Cheers

                Hazza,

I use 2 slightly smaller ones (780x380x380), and very happy with the dust and weather sealing (keep sleeping bags and mats in one, and kids toys and stuff in the other). Being a bit smaller means I can load them onto the roof full, but I do lack a little in the height department, so it isn't the easiest thing to do.

I also cart an BlackWold turbo tent, and have double jerry can holder up top, so the smaller size suits my needs. I had a jigsaw puzzle to fill in the roof cage, and these two cases slot in perfectly for me.

Harry, I am looking at getting the Rhino Large Cargo bag to put up the front of my Pio Platform (1500mm (L) x 1100mm (W) x 300mm (H) )which I will stow the Tent and Bedding etc in and at the rear of the rack I'll get from Bunnings, the Pelican 780mm (L) x 380mm (W) x 380mm (H). Next to that at the back most likely will be a Water Jerry and Gas Bottle. The Pelican Case is just $149 from Bunnings which I thought is a pretty good price. In the case I intend on carrying critical spares, oils, Rear Airbags for Charles etc...

Loading the rack well is like a game of Tetris.
What I suggest, is to mark out your actual roof rack size in chalk on the garage floor, and sit you gear in the boundarys to see if it fits.
Its also easy then to work out the actual left over space or size needed for other items.
                    Cheers

Our last trip we used one of the Stanley cases for our sleeping bags etc.

But we were using a tarp over all our roof cage (especially for the tent and self inflating mattresses).

The combo kept all dust and water (that we encountered) out.

Oh, and the reason we went this route is because it was only realtively cheap, and we needed to run the tarp for the mattresses anyway.

Guys thanks for your responses 'muchly' appreciated.

I'm packing the Prado Wednesday afternoon and can see already I'm going to need additional room. May have to give Bunnings a visit tomorrow.

Great Idea marking out the garage floor. I will be laying the tarp down on the rack, and wrapping up the tent, bag of poles and camping chairs before ratchet strapping them down, and yes weight is so important. Gosh it was easier loading 25 tons on the prime mover (all those years ago) lol.

Let the game of Tetris begin!

                            Thanks again guys
