  • touring with camper trailers in the Vic high country ??

    hi guys

thinking of heading to the Vic high country this chrissy with the family and a prado owning mate and his family.

Reading up on the area a lot of the tracks are described as "not suitable for camper trailers" - but we both have off-road camper trailers (Trackabout Safari and an All Terrain) and we're confident they can handle rough terrain so would hope they'd be fine in the Vic HC.

Though the guides have given us some doubt - when they refer to camper trailers i'm hoping they mean on road trailers ...

has anyone taken a camper trailer through the high country on some of the main tracks - Blue Rag etc (we haven't got a defined route in mind yet).

    cheers

    G'Day

We took our camper trailer over the highlands a couple of years back now (Trakshak) and never had a problem. We based ourselves at a place called Pineapple Flat and managed to get around most of it in day trips. We also did some other tracks with it but the names elude me now, but I will endeavour to look back upon my notes to find out where we went exactly.

PS We towed with a 3ltr non turbo Hilux (trailer weight 1.6t) with no problems. Prado with romp it in.

        Hey Gilbo,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have attached 2 photos of Pineapple Flat entrance areas for you. Not the best photos but I was young and did not think too well back then. We did this trip with our 4B club and had all sorts of cars from an Iveco Turbo Daily 4x4 to Foresters. Forester was towing a box trailer also and the only problem it had was lack of grunt up one hill going up to Razorback, this is where my trusty 'Lux pulled 'em up the hill.

Even a Pathfinder was towing as seen in 1st photo.

Our basic trip was Pineapple Flat to Bright, still trying to chase a route for you but not having much time to look at the moment.

It was a really good trip and the areas are just great for the kids, there were about 12 kids on the trip looking at the group photos and I know that my two had a blast. Still trying to figure out how 3 kids can start a dead fire first thing in the morning faster than the adults (see kids are good for some things  ).

Anyway I hope this helps somewhat.

        Regards

I am in the same 4B club as BigFella.
We have had several trips down there and have had campers on each one.
Easter last year I ran a trip down there and we camped at the Base of the Crooked river trail.
This trail was not recomended for camper trailers as it has MANY river crossings and a failrly steep climb out that goes for several km's.
We dragged a T'VAN and a Kimberly through there with no problems at all.

If you have been into Bendethera Valley the long way (from Araluen) its similar to that. I have towed 1 tonne worth of trailer in there a few times, just be sure to put a vehicle in front thats not towing just incase you need a hand.

          Ben..
Its all in a days work for a Toyota!!

Yeah .. it probably is a twig from the bush in the foreground but you could convince a lot of people that its a tow rope

It took me a moment to come to the same conclusion!

thanks for the feedback guys. Still reveiwing trip plans, but as we're both towing and i will still have Grandcraps by then i think we'll stick to the easier tracks and enjoy the camping!

You wont find any reason to attempt to take a trailer up to Blue Rag, and it is arguable if you will get up it on Grandtreks (unless its been graded recently) without the trailer, let alone with it

Look for good base camping like Buckland valley and do some day trips out of there
