  • Portable/Removable Winch?

I was talking to a fella at work today about 4x4 stuff. We got chatting about winches and he's recommendation to me was to get a winch & cradle that is portable. You can use it either on the front or the back by slotting it into the existing square tow hitch. You would obviously have to put one on the front.

:?: Has anyone seen or used these?

:?: I know this is akin to "how long is a piece of string" but how often would you require to be winched out backwards?

I like the idea of it being portable front/back, but it's also got to be practical whilst on the move. The last thing I want is a filthy winch chucked in the back of the car, although he said you can just drive with them still attached to the car, I rekon they would rattle around abit...

Any thoughts would be much appreciated

    Cheers!

      Hey Chippy you're a champion.

Kind of looks a bit messy. I wonder how it would go left on the car while driving with dust/water ingress and general vibrations.

I did actually look at these semi-seriously and wouldn't leave it on the vehicle. Great for a portable rescue appliance that can be hooked front or back, or to any vehicle in a convoy .... but then there's where to carry it, store it etc

Its quite strong, apart from looking a tad untidy, and has the advantage of being able to pull from any point around the vehicle (provided there is something strong enough to pull from). IMHO the only points, on the Prado, stong enough for recovery, are the front aftermarket recovery (or Gen II tie down) points and the rear hitch or aftermarket recovery points.

At least with my XD9000 fitted to the bar ... I know where it is, I know its really secure and I'm not traipsing mud through the car when I pack it away.

I know it limits me to winching from the front ... but I have been looking at Flyndrive's FJ Cruiser and its front and rear mounted winches ... and thinking how to go about mounting a rear winch on the Prado

It all comes down to the territory you are travelling in, and how many people are in the convoy.
If you are going to never never by yourself in the wet season it could save you lots.
If you are with lots of people a snatch strap would suffice.
If you are constantly pushing the fourby boundaries it would be alright but a hand turfer might save you some coin for the amount of times it is used.

It looks great and would be great if you had Two people built like a brick shithouse to handle it :?:
