    Dear all

I have just finished a calculation for my weekend trip cost to a nearby town 230km south of Ulaanbaatar 50% offroad. i filled my tank just outside of southern checkpoint and i clocked exactly 76 liters of AE92 and took off to my destination, some food, my backpack full of winter clothes (20 something kg), tent (50kg) and full tank. no snow at all on freeway half the length and compacted snow off the highway for the rest of my leg. Outside temp -25c with headwind (almost doubles the chill) coolant temp never reached half the gauge (only one fourth all the way) with regular Siberia antifreeze mix up to -50c so it's a fairly good mix.
winter tyres and no roofracks or anything, speed constant 50-60kmph engine rev 1600-2000rpm
got to the town and light came on (230km) filled my tank and exactly 74 liters this time, scratched my neck in disbelief and went to play around on the fresh snow for like 10 mins, did not get bogged or anything, no spinning tyres, camped, met my friends, idled for 25min to keep it from freezing. Headed home, this time wind from back, rolling hills (same route) speed little less (40-50kmph) with 300kg of butchered cow in the back. and only 25km short of my home just outside the checkpoint i filled up the tank first time, engine died.
grabbed my canister and walked 8 km or so to have it filled, this time it's 5pm and already dark, -30c or something.
10 liters in 20 liter canister and the rig would not budge (still starving of fuel) went back and got another 10 liters and engine started to run but very rough like a diesel (NKNKNKNKNKNKNKNKN). but first thing is first, i took off anyways as i have already lost hour and a half walking to and from gas station in cold.
got into my garage and just as i was parking, engine cut off. fine, i got home atlast, then went to check for spark plugs, wirings they are fine, nice and dry (all new but i still checked as i do not have full confidence in chinese parts)
I am intrigued 460km total distance with little idle and burned almost 140 liters of fuel (not winter blend) clearly there is something wrong which could have left me frozen dead in the wilderness.
this evening after work (few hours ago) i refilled the tank and 78liters. back in the garage, i heard this zzzzzzzzzz sound coming from the fuel tank and exhaust sounds like V8 (PLPLPLPLPLPLP) smoke is not continues but (PLPLPLPLPLP) no color change in smoke but clearly PLUTTERING PLPLPPLPLPLP. Did the fuel pump gone toast? there is no odd sound in engine this time, no diesel like NKNKNKNKNKs.... I am speechless... what do i do? sh*tty milage in winter is normal but returning little over 2 km to the liter seems really odd to me even by Mongolian standards
oh oil is W30 siberia moly blend syntechic.

one other find, the coolant definetely changed color (it was green when i bought it) and had it changed by a mechanic with the rest of lubrication few days ago. i have the remainder of the coolant in my back. what was green is now brown and strange odorous spungy (gelly) thing on the filler cap. excess coolant hose completely blocked... this is not normal. what do i do? does it have something to do with consumption? did anyone experience 2.7 liter consuming 34L\100km?
but starts right up even after 8 hours outside the office with no hesitation. that's a plus for me

Blown head ?? Fairly common on them here in Aus especially when running LPG which you dont have. I doubt you would see any signs of a cracked head or blown gaskets with those outside temps ?? Maybe a sensor is stuffed so running rich causing excessive fuel use ?? I would presume without fail you would be running a thermostat or you would be freezing your ass off in the car as well as outside ?? Im only throwing a few possible things your way that maybe you could check. Generally the 2.7 is a great motor with very little trouble, pull well, not to bad on fuel (normally) and do high klms only the head been a known issue generally due to the high klms (like yours ) or running LPG stuffs the valve stem seals and also cracking of head due to excess heat..........Cheers Steve

Also when changing coolant all the hoses, heater core etc must be flushed right through other wise there is a possibility of the two coolants mixing together and causing gell like substance in the radiator causing it to block up and do damage to the motor due to over heating. I cant imagine anything over heating in -25/-30d temps (jesus christ thats cold lol) I have no idea how that would feel and especially walking in it..............

Check your fuel filter, it maybe leaking, also check your fuel tank and other fuel lines, could have a crack in it so fuel leaks out..

Thanks for your input Steve. it's got 170k on meter. If it were gasket, it would have had profound display in that cold...
-30c might sound cold but the real freeze is from what's known as wind chill effect... it is horrible and after walking several hundred meters against wind is enough to loose your nose and ears.
it's really dry cold here in Mongolia so when you bgab some snow with bare hand, there will not be that much water when it melts in your arms (powering) we call it.

Wow! Awesome story man! Minus 25, that's crazy. I can't really offer any more advise other than what has already been said. I'd definitely be flushing and replacing the coolant. Maybe some gel has upset a sensor and is disturbing the fuel mix.?
We would love to see some pics of your prado offloading in Mongolia! Certainly a contrast to our 35*C + summer days here at te moment!
            Cheers, Ben.

              Hi all?

I finally found the fault, fuel line running into engine got a leak and somehow the fuel pump was shot. antifreeze problem is fine after a flush. it is running smooth except high idle all the way to 1200 or so (I cleaned the intake assembly in the process) maybe thats why?
all in all, i am happy to see my truck running again and hopefully this time no drama. we have 4 days off for the new year and i am planning a family haul to ski resort north of capital.

Croozza was right indeed. thank you all for your support and i wish you happy new year!
