  • Most important modifications/purchases

    Ok guys,

Might cause a few arguments but what do you think is the most important modification or purchase for touring.

At the minute have dual batteries, 2" lift, winch, bash plates, uhf.

Already do a heap of beach driving and looking to do some remote touring...

Was thinking maybe drawers, or dual wheel carrier.... what are your thoughts.

    Cheers
    Josh

    hi mate.

always at the top of my list when i start out is tyres. get a good tough set of tyres to suit what and where you're driving.

it doesn't matter how much gear you have, if your tyres can't keep up, you won't get home.

i never buy tyres based on price. i had a cheap $500 suzuki, (grey LWB in my build thread) and put $1500 worth of tyres on it.

the Pro comps on my prado are about $550 each, and i have 6.

next is safety and survival. a EPIRB, spot tracker, or something like that. fire extinguisher and first aid.

then you can carry on with the rest.

    cheers

Josh, Your accessories should suit what you want to do with the vehicle. Below are the two questions I would ask my self.

Rear drawers are great do you carry heaps of stuff? Cargo barrier to go with it as well? Water tank between draw set and barrier?

Or is a second spare wheel more important where you are?

The self debate of what item to fit next is always a struggle. The other thing is see what is one special and buy it that way.
That is what I have done. I made a list of what I wanted and just waited till things have been on special.

Not much of an answer but your Prado is yours and your descion to priorities what items you want to suit what you are doing.

      SOL.

The next thing I would put at the top of your list before remote touring is definitely a good quality steel bulbar. Roo or camel versus Prado is not pretty!

As Steve has said, tyres are a top priority, and suspension about as important IMO. After that its a bit harder to order things. A good fridge is a must for touring, I am a big fan of having everything organised in the rear so I got drawers pretty early on with my first Prado, but that depends on the individual.

If beach driving a fair bit you can't go past a set of Maxtrax or 2 even.

No point in looking at dual wheel carriers as I haven't released mine yet, once mine is on the market I would make it a real prioritory

          Cheers Andrew

There's already quite a few threads on this same/similar topic. Perhaps the MODS can link these up into one:

            A Modicum of Modifications
Newbie -I need you wealth of knowledge - modifications
            Advice for my first Mod.
On a limited budget. Where is the best place to spend the $$$
            Prado Mods...which order.
            Mods for around oz trip

I agree with AJ120 and would select the best Tyres you can seeing as you already have a suspension lift (which would've been my second recommendation).

After this it depends on what you are intending to do the most. This'll determine what you might need next.

Others things that would be worthwhile to consider are: Air Compressor, Good Lighting options, Bullbar, Recovery Options. Storage options will depend on whether you are towing or not, and whether you want internal (drawers) versus external (roofrack) options.

A good communications option for remote touring is also important. Perhaps a HF radio, satellite phone and backup EPIRB system?

$$$ will ultimately determine what you do first and how. You can spend heaps on building up a professional rig, but then again, this isn't always needed. So don't feel as though you need to have everything first. Build up as you go. Travel with others that have items you don't to complement each other.

At the end of the day, everyone will have an opinion on this. And every set-up will be different depending on the user's needs.

Alright team, thanks for all the replies. But you haven't made my job any easier, hahahaha.

Just to clarify, have a set of Cooper AT's on the back and Roadstones on the front, with another cooper on the back..... Was a little worried about this before i bought it, but talking to a few lads they reckon it's ok.

Have to Toyota Bullbar and a cargo barrier already installed (taken out atm so i have carry longer items but will go back in for big trips.

Already have the epirb as i dont mind the odd bush walk and just got a decent 4WD first aid kit as i got a discount with the last First Aid course work put me on. Also have the snorkel and fire extinguisher as well.

AM thinking maybe a compressor might have to be next, surely there are threads on underbonnet mount vs in car but what do you guys think.

I actually think the biggest obstacle next will be trying to convince the hugs and kisses that i need to spend more dollars......

Get all same tyres along with an extra spare.

I use portable air just because it was cheaper and allowed me more options to use (ie not restricted to Prado).

                          Get some Maxtrax too.

Was thinking that ntp, but it seems like a waste not to use perfectly good tyres!

although not expensive, reading up on all the injector problems and the fact that i want to be going remote, am thinking an secondary fuel filter/water seperator might be a good idea as well.
