  • What's 300k between friends?

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong spot, feel free to move it mods.
....So my Prado has just clicked over it's 300,000km
The minister for finance is talking about replacing it.
I spoke with the local Toyota dealer, whom we've bought about 8 or so Hiluxs through, about trading it.
They'll give me roughly 23/24k for it.
In a perfect world, I'd be able to get hold of a late 2009 120 series and be as happy as pig with mud.
Real world; they are getting damn hard to find. And I promise I've tried really hard to like the 150's but I just can't take to them.
So the minister for finance suggested a 200series.
Am I going to like it or hate it?
At the moment there is a 5yo and a 2yo in the back most of the time, maybe by the end of the year a new addition(?)
The current prado does a lot of kid taxi work, but also has a lot of fun at Beachport - sand is good!
But it can get used to tow hayrakes and caravans and boats as well.
Anybody got any thoughts on what I should be looking for with either of them?
And most importantly, can I still come and play here, even if we do go to a 200series? Or will I be banned for treason
    Thanks in advance,
    GTX

Well Stewy put a cat (FJ) amongst the pigeons at the GTG. While the 200 is a Toyo, at least the FJ uses the Prado chassis LCOOL is still a good site.
Seriously, 120 v 200.... The torque of a 200 is over 50% more, so would be nice with the towing you do, and you also go up to 3500kg braked. The 200 is marginally bigger, 100 mm both wider and longer, IMO not a big deal but how many tight car parks do you manoeuvre?
I guess with a possible 3rd on the way, would the 5y/o be in the third row or would the 3 share the middle row. I have fitted 3 carseats across the middle row of the 90, but it was tighter than a .... The interior width of the 200 may be more what you're after.
If you have good rapport with your dealer (sounds like they should love you) they may give you a 200 for a few days so you would get a good idea if it suits. I would jump at a 200 if the boss let me

If the minister for finance gave me the thumbs up for a 200 series, I wouldn't be asking twice

In my un biased opinion I would have no problems with a 200 on a PP trip as it would keep my 200 company.I replaced my 120 after the last GTG with a new 200 and if you put your backside in on you wont want to get it out. They have got grunt through out the entire rev range They are only about 20mm longer and higher and 80 odd wider and that 80mm makes them look hugh.Interior space is BIG to reach the back of the 2nd row seats I have to sit on the tailgate and reach in,things like stretchers and campchairs now fit length ways in the back instead of across the back. One of the reasons we got the 200 is for towing ,I wanted more than the 2.5t the Prado offers. If you can do a good deal and are prepared to wait for delivery go for it,It was about 9.5k more than an Altitude Prado at the time.On a recent trip up the coast on the tar it got 11.1lt/100k with less than 2k on the cloakbut that will drop next month when all the bar work goes on

          What he said!

The 200 is a big spacious unit and more like cruising down the hwy in your lounge chair than a car,i have driven a few 200's and they are a bit "bulky" around town but with a suspension upgrade to reduce that big car body roll i think you could tame one as an all rounder,
I had a 04 100 series GXL before my 120 and i still get to drive it as the father inlaw bought it off of me,they are a step up in ride quality and long distance travel comfort to the 120.

it's a pity the 150 has'nt grown on you, friends of ours now have a brand new VX and i had a drive of it and was pretty impressed acctually it was light in the steering and felt solid if a little to solid if anything with the 18'' wheels on it........The body shape of the 150 still has'nt grown on me either really it to me looks like someone over inflated a Rav4...........but they are they way of the future i suppose.

I'd be keen on a 200.........they are the flagship arn't they!

          Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....
          22'' Lightbar......

Mine's a GXL, it can be pretty damn tidy when it has a wash'n'polish, even internally can look good when it's been de-kid'd, and had a through clean. Not to many toys externally except the delux ARB colour coded winch bar.....
Who the heck offered you 10.5k - that's just mean man!
Have a sqwizz at rebook or glasses guide.
Hell, for what mine's done I'd have been happy if he'd said 20/21k
Maybe they were playing nice because of all the hilux's we buy for work, although there'll be one less, since we now have a dodge ram at our place, needed the bigger payload for plough parts and spares when in WA.

I suppose if the boss says yes, it's full steam ahead! But in truth it depends where your most likely to use it. Sounds like power and space are priorities, so I think it's a no brainer. Having said that, I go wheeling with a 200 up here in Cairns that has all the fruit, locked front and back, even need GVM upgrade and I occasionally leave him on off road climbs just due to the weight of his rig. Plus if the wife is a full time driver, carparks can be daunting in such a rig, even if they are only 80mm bigger, they're still bigger.

Just my thoughts....... did I mention go the 200!

                  Cheers,
                  Dusty

Carparks aren't an issue - during harvest semi's of hay get moved all over the place - and no gate posts have been taken out, can drive a truck - can drive and park a cruiser.
