  • Essentials for a trip to Fraser Island

    I have a Fraser trip planned for this month and wanted to ask what vehicle preparations I should do to the Prado and the essential items I should bring along with me in case something does go pare shaped.

    Currently I have a simple recovery kit consisting of the following items:
    * ARB D shackles,
    * ARB 10 tonne snatch strap,
    * ARB deflator,
    * shovel
    2014 Toyota Prado 150 D4D Auto (facelift); ARB Deluxe Bullbar; OME 2" Lift; Rhino Pioneer Platform Rack; Redarc BCDC 1225 with Optima Yellow Top; BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM2; Lightforce Genuine Custom 70w HID; GME UHF; Safari Snorkel; Rigid Industry SR-Q2 side lights (yet to be installed); Domin8or winch (yet to be installed)

    I could add plenty to your list, consider taking:

    Bushmans insect repelent (trust me you will need this)
    A inflateable (for Eli Creek)
    WD40 or other (think of all that water youll be going through)
    Compressor (in case of unexpected flat)
    Two way radios (to communicate to other drivers)
    Beer (its damm expensive on the island)
    $1 coins for showers (if staying at Central Station)
    Jerry can of fuel (see explanation on beer)
    Spare parts (radiator, spark plugs etc)
    Oil, radiator and brake fluids (you can never be too prepared)
    Plenty of cable ties (120 Prados loose plenty of plastics stuff underneath)
    Hand tools (see explanation on oil etc)
    Hat, sunscreen etc (it gets hot up that way)
    Cash (not everywhere has ATMs)
    Eyes in the back of your head (Guys overtaking on the inside, outside, planes taking off and landing, backpackers who cant drive 4WDS and know the road rules or even know to let their tyres down and Dingoes)

    That pretty much says it all. Oh and the only decent stuff ARB makes are diff lockers and winch bars. I dont trust their recovery gear, been there done that.

      Thanks for that mate!

      I think I'm covered for fuel; the prado has a 180l tank that I will fill just before I hit the barge over at Inskip Point.

        We did our last trip in our LWB 97 Vitara and with 60l plus 20l jerry ended up having to put another 20l on the island to last the week. Hence why we bought the Prado, the Vitara struggles towing the Cub camper. I ended the trip with a huge list to fix on the Vitara.

            Camping all the way. I'm hoping to find a decent camp spot that isn't a too bad fishing spot. I'll be bringing along a Waeco 50l fridge for the food/beer and an esky for the fish/bait.

              Fungi,
              A tip to make ice last as long as possible is to get a short piece of garden hose and at one end attach a 13mm fitting that would fit into a click on hose fitting.

              Put a bit of plumbers tape around the fitting and insert it into the bung hole of esky.

              At the other end of esky place a piece of timber/brick or whatever to ensure water is directed towards the hose and as ice melts it will slowly drip out of hose.
              The connector looks something like the one shown in this link( 3rd down)

              http://www.growell.co.uk/c/32/Irrigation.html

              You will find ice lasts a lot longer with no water in bottom.

                  Sounds great. It is a very special place to visit or live. We didn't have any trouble, camped at Central station but covered the whole island. Got excellent L/100 kms and didn't need any extra fuel - Diesel. The ease with which you can traverse the island is a factor of the amount of rain recently. More rain more traction. It is not all that difficult terrain so I do not think that you need to go nuts with spares.

                  Enjoy yourselves.

                    Just one small point,
                    Remember the more weight you carry the potential for more problems, particularly getting bogged in sand :twisted:

                        Most probably around the same time. If you see a Silver D4D prado with ACT plates wave!

                          Thanks for the feedback! What I'm going to do is get front and rear recovery point just in case something does go wrong and am prepared to assist someone else if they are in trouble.

                            For your Rear recovery point these are good if you have a tow bar only about $60-$70.

                              for an even cheaper rear recovery point pull out the gooseneck put the eye of ya strap in where ya goose neck goes and reinsert the pin makin sure it passes through the strap eye, you can snatch using this method, works just as well as the shackle point but it comes free of charge
                              had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.
