  • Trolley Jack - How strong?

For working on Prados (mine's a 150) what is the recommended WLL for a trolley jack? Aldi have one on sale for $25 but it's only rated to 1300kgs and I know the curb weight of my 150 is 2900kgs.

I wouldn't trust a $25 trolley jack but you should never work under the car without good quality stands or ramps, not just the jack. But you already knew that, right?

Yes, I'm not that silly. But as for the WLL? It's listed as "Complies with AS/NZS 2615 standard" so presumably has passed some sort of testing.

I have a Bluepoint 2.5 t trolley jack (SnapOn secondary brand) that I picked up on special as a mate is a SnapOn agent. But as Ozpat said the key really are decent stands. I have some welded steel stands from one of the usual chain of accessory shops that claim to be good for 3.5t and with the Prado sitting on 4 of these it is scary wobbly. I had the car up on stands to do the gearbox/transfer case breathers and gave up when pulling the hoses out of their clips made the car move! When I bought the trolley jack it came with a couple of SnapOn cast stands rated at 4.5 American tons so about 4 t and they are so solid it is unreal. And never be tempted to get under the car or even change a wheel with a trolley jack alone, always put stands under too.

As for the WLL I think the Aldi one is too low.

Other issue with the 1300kg trolley jacks is the lift height, I have a 1600kg jack that I bought 10yrs ago, I too was a bit worried about the capacity, but as it turned out it only just lifted the wheel off the ground before running out of lift.. That made my disscission very easy, I now have a 2.5t trolley that will lift the prado very high onto some nice strong cast stands.

I bought the Bluepoint jack because it is low enough to get under the sideskirts on the Clubbie (<100mm) and lifts high enough to get the Prado seriously off the ground. When I first brought it home the boys went out and had a play. The missus appeared 20 minutes later to go to the village and found that her car (Prado) had both back wheels off the ground with the chassis on stands. My car was the same and the Rodeo had it's bum pointing to Mars with the jack under it. And no boys to be seen.

While we're on the subject, where do you position stands on the front of a 120?

I think I'll have to hunt down some cast stands. I've got some supercheap jobs at the moment, and not happy with the stability.

On the side chassis rails near the transmission/transfer case cross member.

Any suggestions as to where to purchase a suitable jack and wheel stands from? Supercheap occasionally have specials but I don't know if there SCA branded stuff is any good.

Picked up a good set of stands from Tradetools. They're mainly in Qld but I believe they have a store in Dandenong...

Fido..Repco occasionally throughout the year have super specials on their Speedy Pro lift HD Trolley jack,WLL 2000kg (would not go any lower). Pin Repco on your PC and look out for the special price of @$140 (at press). You can get the non speedy one for @100 bucks but I'd personally go the former. Excellent jack, can't fault it. FWIW I saw the Aldi one's, would struggle to lift half my Barina, quarter the size of mine!

There's a Pro-Lift 2000KG Trolley Jack in the current Repco catalogue for $99. I'm assuming this is the non-speedy model but what is the difference between this one and the speedy?

Jack is on the last page.
