  • Ice-box and Camping lantern recommendations - what works well

Hi, I want to replace some older and damaged kit and looking for some recommendations please.

    1. Mid size Ice-box for camping. This is to supplement our frigde with ice for beers / food etc
What brand would you recomend Waeco, evacool, icekool etc and why

    2. Camp lanterns/ lights. Already run a versalight when were are away but want a couple of camping lanterns for tents and to be portable. I dont want one than runs on primary on normal 4D batterys etc but is 12 volt rechargeable that I can charge back up in the car in the day. Something like coleman etc . Any brands you highly recommend. I heard someone say the batlights were good?

    Cheers

    Hey Rob

I have a Waeco ice box and I have to say it works very well for the price, holds ice for days! Also we run 2 of the Coleman Retro rechargeable lanterns, expensive yes but the 2 settings and night light feature won us over, came with a handy storage / protection bag as well. They seem to last for ages.

    Cheers Dan

I run Evakool fiberglass eskys up here in Darwin and i have found them to be far and away better at holding ice than anything else, they have a seconds shop online and are very well priced......Usually the seconds are hard to tell apart from the firsts and still carry their warranty.
Home made block ice is the best for longevity.........keep the esky shaded and minimal open closing and cool anything first before it goes in and KEEP the cold water in there to fill the voids and you will have ice for over a week.

      Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....
      22'' Lightbar......

Evakool in Caloundra make an icecool esky (the blue one) BCF sell them. Will keep block ice for up to 10 days and at times even better.
Have had a couple of them for years, they are the insulated plastic ones, very heavy duty, will not star when hit, like the fibraglass ones.
Can not say enough about them as an esky.

+1 for the icecool esky from bcf they are very tough and don't mind being bashed around, still no dents or cracks.
I also have 2 Coleman retro lanterns. They are brilliant, good batty life, very bright on the high setting and the night light is a god thing.
I also have a mate with their quad lantern and they are also good for the fact they separate in to 4 lights.

            Cheers Matt

              Thanks guys,
I will go check out the evakool range at BCF, as I see they do a Poly and a fibregalss option.
The Coleman lanten and the batlight both seem to fit my needs well. Will report back my findings.
              Cheers

Just be aware that the fibreglass one will show damage when they get a hit. poly is the way to go.

Tropical Ice is another very good brand, very tough & work well.

I was given a 41 liter Waeco cool ice with my fridge . Being an ex alcoholic I've had a lot of different esky's and the Waeco is the best yet . It's tough and while it is a different shape to other esky's you can stack stuff on top of it in the car .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

                    lIGHTS

I use an LED strip light that looks like a 2 ft fluro . It only draws 0.8A and produces a nice diffused light . It came from Ledlights Aust , they also have it in a 1 ft size .
I've got a Waeco ice box that came with the fridge and I've tried those blue ice flat packs in it . The advantage of the flat packs is that they've got anti freeze in them so they can be cooled to a lower temp . Problem is they're pretty expensive but I got a box full of them from a guy on the net for $25 who imports medical stuff that needs to be kept cool in transit .
                    Cheers Ross

Hi Robert, if you are ever in Caloundra you can buy some Eva Cool "seconds" from the factory door and save quite a few dollars, you can call them first to see what they have in stock at the front door.

I had a problem with a leak from the bung...it was replaced, free of charge, and its all good now. They have since changed the bung design a little while ago so the leaking problem has been sorted. I also had a faulty lid strap, once again it was also replaced (and I was given a free spare), no charge. Excellent service. Good esky, and made in Australia!

Techni Ice make a pretty good esky for the money. Find them online. Can get them individually but they do pretty good combo deals. As an idea, my 70ltr spent the day in the sun in my tinnie at Hinchinbrook. Was the BArra opening so pretty hot. Had 1 bag of ice, three litres of softdrink and an 86cm Barra in it. At the end of the day had about 1/2 cup of water, that's it. Ice still, well ice, and drinks and fish cold.

                            Cheers,
                            Dusty

Second that may have to race you there lol. Would have been good in that last blackout we had during those storms. Washing the dishes by candle light wasn't that much fun, then again it never is right lol.
