You'll need to get the exhaust adjusted to poke out the side.
Even cutting a hole in the mudflaps will result in them getting pretty hot and distorting on long trips.2011 150series GXL

I put some on for the 2012 GTG and had no trouble with them getting hot and they did not distort and that was driving with them on, for about 8000km.
One of the flaps is blacker than the other one is, because of the exhaust, but that is it.
