  • Pajero rollover - A reminder to be careful out there

    All,

Link copied from another forum, but a vivid reminder that even the simplest manoeuvres can catch you unawares.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeYmDOzoibk

I believe this occured in Vic a few weeks ago whilst reversing to retrieve another stuck vehicle.

**Moderators: welcome to move this to a more appropriate section.......maybe we need a topic heading for 'Education"?

I don't think that there is much to say about this. The guy in background got it fairly well covered I feel. But that's just way scary and looked all to easy to roll over at such a slow speed.

Yep ... the voice in the background summed it up for me.

Pretty scary stuff. To go from 'in command' to 'seriously messed up' in the blink of an eye ... and at such slow speed.

You are right about the education... keeping in mind hindsight is 20/20 8) it makes me think about how to avoid such innocent mistakes that lead to potentially catastrophic and life-threatening events.

I'm not suggesting I would have performed any differently than the driver in the same situation. Though, this gives us a chance to overanalyse  the situation and discuss amongst us what we may have done differently.

Seems like a good opportunity in this friendly forum.

With that in mind, this was my observations...

Reviewing the video, there seemed to be two crucial points leading to the mishap...

          1) Vehicles front-wheels slipped and this lead to the vehicle's orientation being at high-rollover risk.

          2) No direction was offered from the bystanders. As the vehicle slid, the driver seemed to lose orientation and continued (albeit slowly) in reverse and no longer pointing down the fall-line. If a bystander had have shouted out, they may have changed the course of events.

          My lessons...

          a) Persisting slowly in the wrong direction is less wise than stopping and reassesing the situation.

          b) Get the bystanders more involved, espeically with tricky manouevers. Make sure they understand they are active participants, even though they don't have their hands on the stearing wheel or foot on the pedal.

          What were your lessons?

            Too true LFaR

One of the best lessons I had was when JeffS, Leachy and I got stuck out the back of Harvey. Even though things were going really slowly we often had someone on the trail with a handheld .... guiding the wheels onto the right line.

On one really tricky descent ... Leachy was driving, I was on the handheld in front of him and Jeff was off on a 45 giving a different view of the terrain and wheel positions. Then rather than confuse the driver with two sets of instructions there was just a very calm quiet voice providing me with a complete picture of the wheels that I couldn't see.

It really highlighted the value of using the eyes outside the car.

Having someone outside the vehicle providing direction can be the difference between getting stuck (or worse) and making it through a tough section. In situations where someone outside the vehicle is giving instruction a $50 hand held radio can be invaluble. Even though I now have an in vehicle UHF, I will continue to take the hand held with me for just this type of situation.

Agree 100%. This will be taught to participants at any 4WD training course.

If you havn't done any 4WD training, no matter how experienced you think you are, GO AND DO ONE!

The worse thing that can happy is that you are reassured that you have been doing everything right.

Who knows, you may even learn something that could save not only your vehicle but your life or the lives of others.

I agree with previous sentiments - if there are other people about, use them!

The ONLY time I have ever come to grief is on my own when I haven't properly checked the track.

I would say we all are guilty of this at some point. I know i am guilty of it.

Hopefully this serves as a timely reminder for all the newcomers to 4WD'ing.

Not that I have ever needed to test it, but I'm of the belief that insurance would normally cover this type of accident.

This assumes a lot about the insurance policy. Though, a while back I called NRMA, and they stated that as long as the track is marked, then they provide normal cover. There are probably many fine details that I didn't ask about. I still have just over a month to figure this out though.

                          Youch!

Nasty..... Thats what happens when you have a couple of tonnes going down a slippery slope.... the momentum keeps it going... until a tree stops it of course.

If that tree wasn't there it could have been much worse!

I screwed up last break in Kalgoorlie, went up a track I'd been up countless times and low and behold, some dipstick has stuck three big ass rocks at the top of the crest (couldn't see them due to the angle I was heading up at) and then I started scraping a bashing over these rather large rocks which ended up denting the fuel tank bash plates. Luckily they went down that side and didn't damage anything else.

As soon as it happened I thought to myself, I knew I should have walked up there first!

Capped off the day with my nephew falling off his 4wheeler and it using MUMSRIG'S rear bumper as a brake! Not happy Jan, just had a new bar fitted from an over zealous P plater running into it!!!
