  • GoPro causing climate control problem

Not sure where this topic should go but as it covers the photography and electrical forums I thought I'd post in General. My neighbour stuck his gopro (3??) on the front right of the bonnet on my 150 GXL and intermittently we had the climate control going batso - blowing warm air then cool, temp selector display going blank and then coming good for a while. At first I thought I had stuffed the aircon pipe during the dual battery install and was resigned to a repair when we got home. We took the camera off and the problem went away!! Tried again the next day and had the same result.
Anyone else seen similar RF interference with the gopro?
    Cheers,
    Soz

Did you have the wifi on on the GoPro?

Mine has been stuck there and other areas on the bonnet and car in general with no issues, wifi on and off. Weird issue, stick it on and take it in to the dealer.

The dealers answer to that will be, there is nothing wrong with the car, the go pro is causing the issue so don't use it in that spot.

Really, mine wouldn't. They would be more interested in seeing if an error code come up. Given the front right on the 150 has no computer (passenger side kick panel and glove box area and the fuse box is passenger side front) in that area I find it hard to believe (not saying its not, just interested in why) the gopro on wifi and iPhone would be the cause given the Bluetooth and wifi toys used in cars these days.

I know you said that you used the iPhone to watch it but by any chance did the gopro have the rf remote and was the passenger controlling it using that as well?

Also just saw that you have a Scanguage, any errors showing up when the GoPro's on?

            Cheers Dan

Didn't think to check the scangauge for error codes Dan. Yes, it was being controlled from the iphone. I did look at the scangauge before heading home (the day after things returned to normal) to see what fuel remained and with about half a tank on the gauge the scanguge said 27 litres. I filled up today and the "fillup" function assumed i'd used 197 litres. Obviously getting some duff info from somewhere. I don't know I will attempt the gopro again in case something more drastic happens (airbags for one). I guess that's why they insist on flight mode in planes.

When the hero 3 was released, the wifi remote was not actually approved for use in Australia. The frequency it operated on was already assigned to another gadget in Australia. That's what the Go Pro website said when it was first released anyway.

Possibility it is the cause of your problem?

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

Found users on other forums experiencing interference when using GoPro and the wifi feature
                  http://forum.freeflysystems.com/inde...fi-alert.1034/
                  http://fpvlab.com/forums/showthread....ion-Wifi-alert

This one is a video of what happened mid-flight when the interference occurred
                  http://diydrones.com/profiles/blogs/...wifi-turned-on

So something on the 150 is getting jammed by the 2.4GHz frequency from the GoPro wifi transmission. It could be the remote key fob being affected somehow and sending signals to the car's computer. This could be one way Toyota's engineers send messages to the computer during development and testing of the 150.

It is probably safer not to operate the GoPro via wifi anymore.

Good find Amts, had a bit of play with ours last night mounted on the bonnet and was not able to replicate but after seeing that 3rd video not something I want to risk. I think you are spot on the key fob theory.

                      Bendman,
Sorry for the slow reply - the gopro was purchased at Harvey Norman in Adelaide. The owner is going to try it out in his Pajero as well as it has climate control and will report further.

Is this only for 150's my gopro didn't do a thing to my climate control or scanguage . It worked great being controlled by the phone .

Perhaps cover the key fob in aluminium foil to create a faraday cage and see if this makes a difference to the interference?

                          Cheers,
